need athletics?

Now is it just me or by looking around this area of the forum, do you need atheltics to get into dartmouth? I have a lot of ECs w/ positions in organizations in focus of politics as well as community service but no sports since im pretty unathletic. Thoughts?

I got in with no athletics at all. It can happen.

But how much of a difficulty does it add?

Its about so much more that just one element, be it sports, or anything else. Not that ECs don't factor in. But you are going to be presenting to any school you apply to a whole package, including a transcript, and standardized test grades, an indication of how you spend your time outside of the class room, and an essay.

With respect only to the ec part, athletic participation, unless at a recruitment level, is not INHERENTLY more helpful than any other activity in which an applicant has been actively involved. If you were to generalize, and that is never really safe, it seems that more often the degree and nature of the involvement impresses more than the activity itself. Whomever you are and whatever it is that makes you distinctly you, just make sure to present yourself in a way that it becomes apparent. This can be conveyed in part by the manner in which you describe the ecs you have been involved. The essay is clearly another way to present yourself. (Not to reitierate your laundry list of activities). And at schools like Dartmouth with the peer evaluation, there is one extra opportunity for the admissions officers to get to know you as a candidate distinct from others.

One thing that does seem safe to generalize is that Dartmouth does NOT want to admit a homgenous group of students. So, the fact that athletics do not play a part in your life, does not hurt. Just as long as you have something outside the classroom that claims your interest.

That being said, if you want to participate in sports at some level at Dartmouth you will find plenty of opportunity - just as you will to pursue debate, or fine arts, or research, music, dance, theatre....

Thanks that was a big help. I thought I was screwed for a second. I have deep involvement in other activities im just uhhh athetically challenged haha.

I got in with 1 year of high school JV cross-country (and I sucked)--so no, athletics participation is not a prerequisite.
