How good is the need based aid for an out of state student? I used the net price calculator for USC and it said I would get no need based aid and a $12000 merit aid. My family makes $85,000 a year and even with a $12k scholarship USC is still way out of our range. Is it realistic that I will get some kind of need based aid?

I wouldn’t think you’d get any need-based aid.

I’m in-state and have a 0 EFC (Estimated Family Contribution) and I get $0 in need-based aid from USC. I do get the Federal Stafford loans, Federal Work-study, and the Federal Pell Grant. I doubt you’d qualify for much in the way of those (perhaps the unsubsidized loans?). I also got the SC Need-Based grant, but that’s only for in-state… and it’s highly limited.

Is the 12k including in-state tuition or not? If it isn’t, then you’re only paying about $9-10k a year because of the in-state tuition. If you picked up a job over the summer and during the school year, you could probably make about $6000 and only be short by about 3-4k, which you could do in loans.

Totally not an ideal situation, but definitely doable. It’s what I’m doing right now.

The $12k does not include in state tuition
