Thank you so much for clicking on this thread. I'd like some help - I'm looking to transfer to a small liberal arts college next spring as a sophomore, but many LACs I'm interested in are not need-blind to transfers (Vassar, Wesleyan). I'd be able to pay about 20k of the tuition, but I'd need about 30k in financial aid. Are there LACs similar to Vassar & Wesleyan that would still be need-blind in terms of admission to transfer applicants? Also, I know Haverford is generally need-blind, but that the policy is revisited every year. Middlebury says it tries to be need-blind to the extent that it has enough financial aid to offer. Does anyone have any experience transferring to these two schools? Thanks!

It sounds like you’re looking for LACs that are BOTH need blind (for admissions) and give 100% of need (for FA). In general, that means the most selective, best endowed schools, so start at the top of the LAC list and work down. AWS are most likely both, take a look at their websites. Since Midd, Vassar and Wes are pretty close to the top of the list, it’s likely that there aren’t very many LACs that are need blind for transfers.

Yeah, I think I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s gonna be hard to find LACs that are both need blind and give 100% of aid. But that doesn’t mean that if I apply needing aid, I won’t get in? By the way, what is AWS?

If a school is not need-blind, it doesn’t mean that you automatically won’t be accepted if you apply for FA. What it means is that it will likely be more difficult as they may accept students with similar (or lesser??) qualifications who can afford to pay full fare. However, it really depends on how much FA a college has to support transfers and how much they want you.

Despite Wesleyan being need-aware for admitting transfers, they still give the accepted transfers full financial aid… so it can’t hurt to apply (you may be already)… but Amherst, Williams, and Swarthmore are your best bet for need-blind admissions for transfers

U of Richmond. It’s need blind, has 100% coverage, not too crazy to get into. Also Wellesley, but I applied there and I don’t want more competition.(jk)

Ah, I applied to Columbia as a freshman ED and I was rejected. Much sadness ensued. I don’t know if I should apply again. I’m at Cornell currently and I’m looking at a 3.85 GPA for first semester (though I don’t know for sure until all the grades roll in)…I don’t know how that would go over in applying to Columbia. At this point, I’m thinking of applying to UChicago (they accept 50 transfers a year, which is actually a lot), Haverford, Swarthmore, Oberlin, and Vassar. I do need quite a bit of financial aid though. What do you guys think I should concentrate on with my transfer apps?

I suspect that Oberlin and Vassar aren’t need blind to transfers. Vassar, in particular, has ridiculously few transfer positions. The college board has transfer statistics for colleges.
