Need College Advice! Desperately

Hello, I am currently a sophomore student at Seton Hall University, a small Catholic school in Northern New Jersey. Recently, I have re-evaluated my situation at Seton Hall and feel I could thrive at a more competitive school. After completing research and reviewing my grades/test scores/extra curricular activities(listed below), I have decided to apply to the University of Virginia and the University of North Carolina. I am asking anyone who has any knowledge about these schools at whether or not you think I would be able to be admitted to these schools. Also, does anyone have any recommendations to schools I should apply to(preferably down south)? Size does not matter to me! Thanks to anyone who can help!

Ending High School GPA: 3.1 our of 4.0
SAT score: 1850
Seton Hall University GPA: 3.498 out of 4.0 (planning on getting a 3.7 this year)

Extra Curricular activities:
-Started a Club Lacrosse team at my current school.
-Write for the school news paper.
-Part of the Italian Student Union.
-Leadership program(Business honors program).
-F.O.C.U.S.- Catholic Charity Program.

Anyone have any ideas?

SATs are low but practically irrelevant at this point. Your GPA is solid. Not super competitive, especially for OOS, but not low either. The average incoming GPA for transfers at UVA is around a 3.4. I had a 3.6 when I applied. If you get up to a 3.7 you will be competitive. ECs are ehhh. I suggest trying to get a leadership position for the newspaper for ISU. Unless you think you can walk on to the lax team at UVA (national champs this year), I don’t know how much the club team will help.

I only ever applied to in-state schools so I don’t have a lot of recommendations. Maybe some other state schools? Also, W&M is very similar to UVA academically, but much smaller, so if size isn’t an issue, you might want to apply there. Virginia also has Washington & Lee, which is a great school, though it stays a little under the radar.

OK, I will definitely look into becoming a figure head in either the Newspaper or ISU. My GPA going up should be no problem because I am going to be focused. As for the lacrosse team, I’m not going to try to make the team, I am just going to say me and a few friends were able to create a club lacrosse team at seton hall(they didn’t have anything before). How do you think my overall chances are? Also, I have been looking at W&M and Washington and lee as well as Davidson.

Hey Jeff how are you paying for these expensive out of state tuition? A more reasonable choice is Rutgers.

I’m from Connecticut and I really want to go down south.

I think you have a decent shot, but admissions are unpredictable. As bottlecap mentioned, make sure to take your financial situation into account because while tuition is typically more reasonable in the south, out of state is always expensive and there is not a lot of financial aid available to transfer students.

Chapel Hill and UVA are really great schools but OOS tuition & room and board can cost you close to 40-50k. Why did you decide to go to Seton Hall in the first place? it is an expensive school with a mediocre reputation. Your GPA is good but how many college credits do you have? Notwithstanding, you have a decent shot at both schools.

I actually contemplated of transferring to UVA for spring 2012, but changed my mind after seeing their OOS tuition :(

I chose Seton Hall because I was given 3/4 of a ride. As for its reputation, it has a very prestigious reputation among employers in the city. Also going into this year I have 35 credits(that’s after my freshman year). I do realize it is expensive but I’m willing to make the sacrifice. I do really want to know if you think I do have a decent shot (especially at UVA).

You have quite number of credits and your GPA is good. I would apply and see what happens. It is a 50-50 chance in my opinion.

This is just me but I would think HARD before leaving a school that gave me close to a full-ride to go to a MUCH more expensive school.

Do you have any recommendations that would boost my chances of being accepted to UVA?

I know people have said this before…but…I would really think about transferring…I got a 3/4 ride at Seton Hall also (didn’t go because I had a better ride somewhere else) BUT do you intend to go to grad school (I’m assuming something in business?)? If NOT and lets say you only get a the average finanial aid that students get at UVA and UNC, you’ll still be paying between 20,000-22,000 dollars per year. ASSUMING you get all your credits transferred you’ll have a minimum of 40,000 dollars in loans. Not to mention grad school, if you go. Which, if it is business you’re looking at like…what? 50,000 for grad school? You’re looking at close to 100,000 in debt…

BUT i’ll side with you and give you my opinion for transferring since that’s what you asked.

1: Boost the gpa to about a 3.7
2: Get some recommendations
3: Take a slightly heavier load than usual. IF you take usually 15 credits, take 18 and kick ass it will show you’re serious.
4: Take summer glasses/winter session and do the same; kick ass. You’ll be surprised how much people will over look certain things if your past 25 credits are straight As
5: Write an awesome essay if possible.
6: Do some type of business lab, if your school has it. Like hands on activities during your school year that show your dedication to this. I dunno if they have things like that, but the equivalent for science would be assistant TA, working in a lab, etc.

Will do, and With all of this, do you feel I will have a decent shot. AI also plan on applying the day the application opens (supplement still not available).

Also I have been doing some research and I have come to the conclusion I am applying to UVA, William and Mary and Davidson. What do you guys think my chances for all three of these schools are? Again thanks for all the great help!

Anyone have any advice or anything for my chances with any of these schools?

Think W&M a good chance; ditto Davidson – but only if GPA is 3.6+ Also, your essays had better be among the best you’ve ever written. The essays will have greater weight with the transfer adcom than your SAT scores, BTW.

Yeah I think its going to be W&M and of course UVA, which do you think I have a better shot for?

Not to get your hopes up, but I think you have a definite shot at UNC. I transferred to UNC from a top 50 private university in the SE with a much higher GPA, but I know for a fact that kids with much lower GPAs were accepted my year. Really you almost have a 3.5 GPA which is solid for many top universities.

Though let me ask you something, are you sure you want to go from a private institution to a public university? Really the name on the degree does not matter much anymore, it’s better to be comfortable and thrive socially and academically.

I kind of wish I did not transfer sometimes, but I graduated and it’s done with. I came with the most competitive GPA and finished UNC with a mediocre/ average GPA.

Think it over carefully!
