So it's that time of year where us incoming freshman get to select our dorm. I was wondering if anybody had some good advice when it comes to this issue. I would like a semi-quiet dorm, I am not concerned about having a "social" dorm, to be "close" to the gym (nothing more than a 10-15 min walk) and close to some of my classes. If anybody has some input I would greatly appreciate it.

I've never lived in any of the dorms, but this is the general feel I get from reading various posts on this site:

If you are in honors go with Hume- its nice.

If you want a social/party dorm go in the Broward area.

If you want a quieter place then go with:
-Beaty Towers if you want apartment style rooms.
-Lakeside if you don't mind being way on the other end of campus.
-Yulee area and Graham area for normal double rooms.

Also, some of the dorms are for special purposes like the fine arts one and the Engineering community... so make sure you're not picking one of those unless that's what you want to do. And make sure you check for A/C if you want it!

Does anybody know about Riker, Tolbert, West? I do not hear a lot of talk about those dorms. Are the decent dorms or in bad shape?

Tolbert, Riker, and North (no West) are, for the most part, exactly like Broward/Jennings. I think people ask about B/J more often because its closer to their classes, staying there during preview/summer, and just past stereotype. T/R/N are just a short bus ride away (or walking distance) from the Hub and classes. Its close to the ODome, Swamp, Gator dining, frat row, track complex, reitz union, and they really get into their mudfest thing every year. I would also include Simpson and Trusler into that mix. Simpson is mandatory all freshmen.

IMO, Tolbert looked dark and old the last time I visited someone there. I preferred the interior in Simpson/Trusler.

Weaver (the international dorm) is just that. Probably 50/50 mix of internationals and "normal"/"non-international" (<- cant think of a better word choice) students. You can have people from all over, so it can be a great learning experience for many. Australia, France, Jamaica, China, Germany....are some of the countries I remember seeing.

East is the only "learning community" that I have seen really take off. Most of the residents at least start off engineering majors. They pick RA's who are engineering majors and so on. It across the street from the main engineering building and close to the civil, mechanical, and MSE depts. Electric, comp, chem, and biological are further away.

Are there any halls that you think are the best? I have the option of living in Hume, but is it worth the extra money?

I don't know if you have read my other post on Hume, but I only think its worth it if you have the extra money to spend. If you have to take out more loans to afford it then, No. However, it is a nice dorm with newer facilities and would be a great selection. I know that some honors students request Simpson so they can be closer to Hume and can participate in the events/activities that they put on.

Its hard for me to say. I only did the traditional style dorm for one year, and that was enough for me. Murphree and Keys are the only dorms that I would want to stay in, but can be hard for freshmen to get in. If I really had to pick........maybe Yulee/Mallory/Reid (recently renovated, nice bathrooms) or Simpson/Trusler (in Simpson you become a displaced student and get to pick your dorm 1st for the follow year). And like all traditional dorms, have the potential to be very social.

The are also other threads on housing, if you want to take look:

STAY IN HUME, it is the best no matter what your dad says..
