My son who moved from Nj to Santa Barbra is a freshman at SBCC. He registered late and ended up not getting any seats for the main clases for his major. long story short he was rewarded $6000 financing aid. He is an out of state student so even a city college is expensive at the moment. He has only registered for Eng and needs Calculus and physics immediately and there are no seats whats so ever. He is thinking about taking an online class from UC Berkley. My question is that can the remaining balance of his Fincial aid be used for his classes outside of his college? Please someone help me i need some help asap. i would appreciate the guidance.
Highly unlikely that he can use the financial aid from one school at another. Is his $6000 a Pell grant? If so, he could but if he drops below full time at SBCC, they’ll take some of that Pell back.
He needs to go to the professors and try to get into those classes. He needs to work whatever system there is to get into what he needs. Does he need any other classes like English or history?
California schools are packed, and students have to use all their resources to get into the classes they need.
As far as classes are concerned, he needs to take something else that is not full. Why does he need to take those physics and calculus classes right now? He will be required to take general ed classes, so that he can eventually transfer. He could take those classes now. The California public community colleges are impacted. Everything STEM related is full. It takes longer to get through classes at the California CC’s.
If the physics and calculus classes are full and the teachers won’t admit him, he needs to find other classes that are not physics nor calculus. If he takes an online class at Berkeley, he will be charged full fees at his expense.
He’s an OOS student, so he won’t get any aid from the California schools. He’ll get whatever he qualifies for from the federal government.
How can he afford the OOS fees? Since he has come to California for educational purposes, he will not get any reduction of fees when he transfers out to any public CSU or UC. CSU’s are $40K per year. UC’s will be $60K. Going to a CCC for two years will not get him instate residency. Neither he, nor you are working in California and paying California taxes.
California: welcome to our Golden State! Not always greener.
HIs financial aid can only be used at the college that awarded it. He needs to register for classes at THAT college. If his schedule is not full time, he will NOT be entitled to the full time aid he received.
He needs to register for other required courses for his degree…and kale sure he has full time status.
In addition, it’s not the school’s fault he registered late. Classes fill up all the time. He can ask the professors if they will allow him to register for their classes…but he needs a plan B if they say no…which is highly likely.
If he’s not attending SBCC full time, then he won’t get that much in his grant.
Since SBCC costs more than $6k, where would he even have extra funds to pay for the UCB class anyway???
He has many gen eds he should take (IGETC), he should register for that: communication, philosophy, general science with lab, US and California history, foreign language…
Why is he enrolled in a California Community College from New Jersey?
Even IF this gets resolved for the community college…what then…? He won’t get instate tuition in CA public after that unless you parents move there…now.
