Hello. I don't qualify for financial aid (too high of an income). I want to transfer in 2 years. I wanted to know what kind of aid/grants I can get? Anything based on merit?
I have absolutely no knowledge of this stuff, can someone please enlighten me?

Much appreciated and thanks in advance.

BTW I go to a California Community College and want to transfer to UCB or UCSD.

You need to look at their websites.

If you won’t qualify for need-based aid, then you can only get a 7500 unsub loan for each of those last 2 years.

Grants are need-based.

I don’t know if the UCs give much/any merit to transfer students. look at each website. The UCs do give some merit, but I think that’s mostly for incoming frosh.

There is very little money (unfortunately) at the UC’s in California and tuition is going up. It’s good that you are from CA because you’ll have instate tuition. My son was admitted to UCB, UCD, and UCSC from hs (not attending any of them). We were eligible for Blue & Gold due to our income but he only got a small scholarship from each of them due to his major and grades.

Transfers also get Pell Grant, but regarding CAL Grant, I remember reading a weird rule like how they would only give you CAL Grant at the UC if you spend two years or less at community college. If you spend more than two years at community college, then the CAL Grant disappears when you transfer to a UC or something like that. If I can find a link, I’ll post it.

Op said he doesn’t qualify for financial aide so not sure about Pell Grant.

Thank you. I appreciate your responses. So in my case, it would not be possible to receive a subsidized loan. And the maximum amount I could be loaned is $7500 (unsub) for each of the two years. OK. Are gov-loans given at a lower interest rates than pvt banks? If so, what is the typical rate? Private ones probably depend on your credit score but how do you ensure yourself that you will be provided with one by the time you are transferring (i’m a freshman at CC BTW). I really dont know much about this. Please if I can get continued help with this, I would be grateful.

Government loans are at significantly lower interest rates, and you generally cannot secure any kind of private loan without a cosigner or significant assets to put up as collateral.
