Hello, I believe this is my first post, but I was just hoping someone can please help guide me in the right direction with a couple of questions I have.

I am currently a second year CCC student and have been planning on majoring in biology or MCB since I first started and then transferring to a UC. I was planning on applying for medical school after my undergraduate coursework, but for the past few weeks, I have been strongly considering changing majors in case I do not get into medical school. While I do enjoy biology, I do not want to have to rely on biology for a career when there are careers in other fields I may enjoy more if I do not get into medical school. I have been doing extremely well in all my courses, so I am not considering switching because the courses are too difficult, I just believe there are other options that are more appealing to me as a fall back plan.

What I would really love to do if my medical school aspirations do not come to fruition is become a some sort of sports journalist or writer (or any type of career related to sports media like radio, TV, etc). I have been planning on going to UC Berkeley (I'm in TAP), but I don't know which major would be practical in helping me become a journalist, while at the same time allowing me to take the pre reqs needed for medical school. I was thinking media studies or communications, but I am unsure how far that could take me.

Anyways, I just need help choosing a major that would help me get a career in the sports media industry in case medical school simply does not work out. I also love history, but hear a lot of negative things about career prospects with that major. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance!

I had a chance to meet and talk with the beat reporter for the Lakers and he told me that the best advice he could give was to not major in journalism or comm because you feel like you have to. He said it is better to work for the college newspaper, or something similar, and major in whatever interests you. My ex, for example, was an econ major but he easily got internships with ESPN and ABC sports. They told him they look for applicants from all backgrounds. I think you can easily stick with your bio major, if that’s what you want, and just add extracurriculars/internships related to your other interests

I have this same question only I need opinions. I would like to major in mechanical or some other kind of engineering program and do my pre-med courses. However, I don’t want to take on a major that will kill my GPA and not allow me to get into a good medical school. What do you guys think?

didn’t read your wall of text; you can major in pretty much anything you want, as long as you fulfill the med school pre-reqs (calc, chem, bio, physics, english).
Major in something that you like, not in something that will yield the highest GPA. the purpose of college is to learn and attain critical thinking skills, not to pay for 4 years of mindlessly memorizing useless facts/theories in majors like psychology and history where a high GPA is easy to obtain. Majoring in engineering sounds great, and students in the engineering fields are highly sought after. If you work hard, you shouldn’t have to worry about killing your GPA
