my dream is to be a broadway performer (of course there are many like that :P).. i currently go to a private school (very strong in academics) where we study IB (which is of course VERY tough). i'm a junior right now but i want to transfer for my senior year to a performing arts boarding school such as interlochen/idyllwild/walnut hill. my school's music and drama department is very poor and they hold a school musical every.... 2 years. i do dramas and musicals outside of school. i do have singing/acting/dancing training under my belt but i feel like i'll get intense training at a performing arts school.

my mom's against it because it's just one year and feels that it won't 'make much of a difference' and since i'm half way through IB, why not just stand one more year.. but i feel that even ONE year at a school focused on the performing arts WILL make a difference.

oh btw, IB doesn't really count that much towards admission.. maybe just for credits.. correct me if i'm wrong. i do SATs externally and only this really counts right? if i go to a performing arts school, which does not do IB, where i can focus on theatre AND SATs, i think it'll be beneficial for me.. but my mom won't buy it.

i posted this question in the prep school admissions section and was told to just... listen to my mother?? is it going be bad to transfer for senior year? :S

If that is your dream, then it makes perfect sense to go to a performing arts school. I will say this though - I am in the IB program. I feel that it is a very good program and that taking the two years to get the diploma is really worthwhile and would pay off in the long run, and thus your mother has a point. But I feel that IB wouldn't really do as much for someone aspiring in the arts such as yourself. If it was for something more academic I would recommend you finish out IB but I think in your situation you should go for it.

thanks so much for your response! it really does make sense and i guess it would have been better if i transferred in junior year, but that was cause i thought the IB program was going to be fine for me. i agree with you in that it doesn't really do anything for people interested in the arts.. i wasn't even allowed to take higher theatre and music.. so i decided to take higher music history and english...

i think i'm just going to apply anyway. i've already convinced my dad and he feels its the right thing to do :D

You must consider how likely your dream is of unfolding into reality. Gauge your talents, do you really think you'll end up broadway? If yes, go for it. If giving up a rigorous academic curriculum is no biggie for you, go for it. I mean, going to a performing arts school wouldn't necessarily screw you over for an academic university, anyway, y'know?

i guess i'm taking a risk here, but i feel like i have the passion and commitment in musical theatre and hopefully my dream will come true, but a job like that has an unstable income. in the performing arts boarding schools i'm looking into, they state they have a strong academic program as well, so if i decided to minor in music and major in something academic, then i can still do that :D

(i originally wanted to be a lawyer :P.. but the music sunk in and i wanted to be a performer)

Tell me: do you want to go to a conservatory/school of drama to get a B.F.A., or are you interested in a non-specialized college and earning a B.A. in theater/drama?

another option, see if your crappy boarding school has some program with a 4 yr college near by where you can take drama/arts classes there, or be a techie or whatever you want to do. I am doing something similar (taking ochem at a local 4yr), and I get the best of both worlds.
