Need help deciding a major. Been in the same spot for a year and a half. Please help!

Hi everyone, im trying to decide what major to pick so heres my current situation. Im 24 years old and got accepted to cal poly pomona. At the community college I attended beforehand, I was majoring in biology, but a little before I finished up my aa, I began to really not like biology. I realized that I see life/nature in more of a spiritual/feeling perspective (on a day to day basis), rather than a scientific perspective. I tried to force myself to think a different way, but it didnt really work. dont know if anyone can relate to this...

Saying that, to be honest, im still living with my parents and want to get out (like most people my age living with their parents) therefore, it would probably be a good idea to get a degree where I have at least a decent chance of making a good income off. Plus the whole family is fine financially right now, but the future is somewhat questionable since they're getting older and my dad isnt exactly in the healthiest of condition, so ya a higher income would be nice!

Anyways, I still like the environmental field alot, and I can deal with some biology, but just not my whole major being biology. Anyways, saying that, here are a few options im thinking about

Maybe enviromental studies or something similar would be better for me. It would give me a sweet chance to explore the environmental field more while getting my degree (since I dont know exactly what I want to do in the field yet). The only problem with this is that cpp doesnt have an environmental studies program, so I might have to wait til spring 2013 or fall 2013 to get in a program at a different university. Plus I heard this major is sometimes seen as a ” treehugger major” by employers.

Or I think id also be good at some type of environmental design (architecture, engineering, etc), but Id probably have to wait longer to get into one of these programs too. If I were to do a environmental design program, id probably try out different universities and see if i can sit in a class or two, to see what the major is all about (which I should have done more of beforehand).

Id really like to do an environmental major, but I also really want to just get my degree done so im thinking maybe I can just major in business at cal poly pomona instead, cause I have an interest in social business. Maybe I can use this degree for the environmental field instead. but I figure with an environmental type major, I can still get into business on my own (dont really need a business degree to get into business) + have more credibilty and a possible skill set to use for the environmntal field.

Anyone else got any suggestions? I can sure use them! thanks for taking the time out of your day to read this!

I think that any major that begins with “Environmental” is worth a look from you. Some majors have a lot more to do with hard science than others, and are more likely to lead to specific career paths.

It is relatively easy to enter a Grad. program in Env. Science regardless of your undergrad. major - provided your record is solid. For Arch. or Eng. you would probably start with Freshman level core courses.

There is ultimately a business (financial) aspect to all types of environmental work.

It sounds like you might be best suited to working for a non-profit env. organization. Take a look at diffrerent programs and try to decide the angle from which you would like to approach environmental issues.

“Maybe enviromental studies or something similar would be better for me…The only problem with this is that cpp doesnt have an environmental studies program…”

You really need to take a closer look at the environmental programs that are offered at Cal Poly Pomona. Here are some options you might be overlooking:
-Geology with an environmental geology emphasis
-Geography with an environmental geography option
-Landscape Architecture

Business could be another pathway, as you mentioned, especially if you later decided to enter a grad public policy program with an environmental policy emphasis. There are multiple pathways for that as well including environmental studies programs, public policy programs, or ag/resource economics programs.
Other options at the undergrad level for business include economics or food marketing & agribusiness management, depending on your particular business interests and employability options.

In general, your environmental interests seem vague and unfocused. I think a “spiritual/feeling perspective” just isn’t going to cut it from a real-world, job-related perspective. I understand it on a personal level, but you also want to find an engaging job when you finish. So, at some level, you’ll need to focus on some mix of data-based science or policy or professional skills.

Thanks for the advice you two, yup I agree that I need to find that right angle to approach the environmental field from. Yup non-profit organization work does sound pretty cool, and ya I also agree that I think that a mixed data based major sounds pretty good since my knowledge in what I like in the field is rather unfocused
