This year I took AP Calc AB, AP Comp Sci A, AP Enviro Sci, Reg Chemistry, Honors LA/History and Chinese 2. Next year I can either take classes at my regular high school or become a dual enrollment student at one of the best community college in my state(Seattle central college). If I were to take classes at my high school, then it would most likely be AP Chemistry, AP Stats(Calc AB is the highest level of math offered), Reg LA/Gov(No AP Lit or Gov offered) and Chinese 3. If I were to become a dual enrollment student which I am leaning towards right now, I would be able to take Calc 2 or 3 (Depends on my AP score on my AP Calc test), Physics 121 (Calculus based physics 1) and English 101. I would be able to finish the whole calculus series(1-3), Linear Algebra(Possibly), the whole series of physics(Calculus based 1-3), english 101 and Political Sci(equivalent to US gov). However I am worried about the absence of a foreign language class which I am afraid can lower my chances to selective schools(Univ of Washington, UCLA, UC-Berkeley, etc). I believe the colleges would like to see that I am challenging myself with sophomore-junior level classes during the last year of my high school career. So, what should I do guys? Btw I am looking to major in Electrical engineering.
I’m not sure how the lack of Chinese in your schedule would affect you. It could hurt you, but if colleges look at where you took your dual credit courses and saw there was no foreign language offered then they won’t judge that. I would go to community college because you can get more for your time. Just my opinion.
Can’t you take Chinese 102 at the community college?
(note: Chinese 101 in college = Chinese 1+2 in HS, Chinese 102 = Chinese 3+ in HS, Chinese 103 or 201 = Chinese 4+.)
Taking 4 college courses per quarter while being dual-enrolled should be okay for you.
I can only take maximum of 3 dual enrollment courses per quarter. I have decided to just stop at Chinese 2 and go on with my dual enrollment classes as I feel like colleges will like to see that I am challenging myself with academically challenging classes than taking a joke class like Chinese 3. Please tell me what you guys think about this, thanks again! Much love.
I just attended the UW admission officer’s session at my daughter’s HS. He said they do want to see four years of five core subject. He said if a foreigh language class offeres level 3, 4, or AP, they want to see them on the transcript.
Really? I don’t mind taking a language course but it is conflicting my schedule. I have huge aspirations in the engineering field hence I really need to take this course load. Would colleges rather see AP Mandarin, Calc 3, English 101 and an elective class than Calc 3/Linear algebra, Calculus based Physics 1/2/3 and english 101/poli sci 121?
Good question.
The ideal would be the following 3 college classes per semester [alter appropirately if your CC uses quarters]
Calc3/Linear Algebra (or Discrete Math or Diff.Eqs)
Calculus Based Physics 1&2
English 101/Mandarin3
Is that doable?
