Need help deciding

I'm currently making a choice between a state university which has a well-known journalism program and an art school in NY for their creative writing major. I'm pretty certain that I want to write for a living, but at this point I think I want a liberal arts education first. Unfortunately, I got rejected from my top choices which were LACs. I'm thinking of transferring after a year if I don't fall in love with the school/program and decide that this IS what I want to do. If I were to transfer, which would be the better school to do it from?

State U: Extremely well-known program. Rural location which I don't like. I'm worried that I won't be sufficiently challenged here, especially in regard to my classmates. Most of the OOS students here come for the journalism school. The school has a bit of a reputation as a party school.
Art School: Urban location. Relatively new creative writing program. I'm worried that the credits won't transfer properly.
What I want in the transfer school : LAC/mid-size university that has a good classics/English/history program. A good creative writing program/emphasis would be appreciated but not necessary. Urban/Suburban with a liberal, intellectual atmosphere. Non-religious, little or no frats, non-core. Basically I want a school where I'll be wowed by my fellow classmates and professors. I'm open to anywhere in the US.
Thank you in advance.

Comments please?

Go wherever the training will be best. Writers do not need fancy degrees, they need to be able to write. No one will care where your degree came from, they will just want to see your clips.

and if u write books that are good, u dont even need a degree....

Your ability to transfer IMO will depend first and foremost on on how well you do, not on where you are coming from.

You will likely do better and learn more where you are happier and more challenged.

You sound like you will be happier at the Art School in NYC.

You sound like you will like NYC.

The credit transfer concern IMO sounds manageable and should not be a dealbreaker IMO.

The criticisms you made of the State school sound like dealbreakers to me.

(Also consider how you willl feel if it turns out that you cannot or do not transfer for whatever reason.)

Therefore, my advice is to go to the Art School, thrive and grow there, and see how you feel in a year.

Good luck!
