Need Help Developing a Fashion

Hey all,

I've been meaning to get some help in this area of my life for a while now, and I figured a shot here wouldn't hurt. So here's the lay:

For the first ~15 years of my life, I had absolutely no sense of fashion, and pretty much took it for granted that I never would. I wore crap that my mom bought, and that was about it. I've never been well immersed in popular culture - being Chinese with immigrant parents (would like to plug here that I don't fall into the typical Asian stereotype - I used to, but by very few means do anymore), I never had a place to look for help in things like fashion and style. Hence, the void in my heart I've been trying to fill!

I've become much more mainstream in the past three years (explosively so, actually, as the result of direct concentrated intent to be so), but there's still several things I'd like to fix. Among these is - you guessed it! My ability to dance! Just kidding. Actually, I'm not. But that'll be in another thread.

For the past three years, literally all I've worn are solid color t-shirts and jeans. And while these t-shirts and jeans look good on me, they are incredibly bland when worn for 1000+ consecutive days. So I need help. I want to make something new - something striking, something very unique, but stylishly so - not freaky unique.

I'm rather on the thin side, 5' 9", in shape - a long distance runner's build. What I'm looking for is something that'll attract attention and convey a distinct personality. Obviously, I know it's going to be hard to recommend something specific to me, seeing as no one here knows my personality/has seen me (I...think). What I'm more so looking for is general advice as to where to start to get ideas - e.g. where to get fashion help in person, like a stylist/dresser, where to look online, what types of stores/styles would cater to what I'm leaning for.

If you want to help me on a more specific level, feel free to add me on FB and we can talk more from there. (facebook.com/intenex)

Thanks in advance everyone!

Try the naked look.

Almost went to jail the last time I tried that one. Looking for something slightly more discreet this time.

Dress like a nun.

I like to wear clothes from American Apparel and H&M. Are you into Polos?

You beat me to it! I absolutely love LOOKBOOK!

HAHA… Yeah, me too. Also, go on Chictopia.com.

Erhm… OP is a guy

Anyways, are you looking for something more conservative in nature, or more outlandish? How about colors? Do you enjoy brighter colors (I mean in like one garment of clothing; for example a red v neck over a white button up with khakis.)? How dressy do you like to be? T-shirts & Jeans? Or perhaps more khakis and sweaters/vests with peacoats?

I’d say here’s the best place to start… [GQ Magazine: GQ](http://www.gq.com/)

Not really that I use that site, but theres some good stuff there

From here, how about you find one of your best dressed female friends and ask her. At this point I have no idea what you’d like to wear, so I cant really give advice beyond that. At the very least, I hope your clothes fit well at the moment.

You’re a guy? Hehe… Sorry. Anyway, Lookbook.nu is a great place to start.

Hahahaha, yeah - I’m a guy. Sorry, forgot to make that distinction entirely clear. Thanks for the help, though ;).

Outlandish is what I’m looking for. Imagine a skin tight black long-sleeved shirt covered with lines of rainbow colors like the Windows Media Player thing that waves or the old Windows screensaver with lines (http://tropic-lines-screensaver.lastdownload.com/tropic-lines-screensaver26176.jpg</a> - like that, but more defined). Outlandish like that. This is a hallucinatory shirt that I’ve been dreaming about finding lately.

I’d like to preferably have something for both casual and more dressed up occasions, but what I’m looking to go for is more dress in general. Def not t-shirt and jeans alone. Bright colors, I really like - like a lime green hoodie, but I’m not sure how consistent I could pull that off with the other types of style I like.

Thanks for GQ, I’ll definitely check that out.

A lot of guys at my school are into the graphic tees. [Threadless catalog of tees popular guys t-shirts. Unique, cool and funny tees. Browsing graphic tees](http://www.threadless.com/catalog/style,tees/type,guys/group,popular)

Those are some nice shirts. Now I need some money fairy_dreams. :D

Get this : [The Light Up Shirt](http://www.thelightupshirt.com/)

Since you’re going to Harvard, don’t wear anything too nice, or else people with think you’re a snob. Wear t-shirts you bought from target advertising your like of Transformers, fictional surf shops, and witty puns like “Tank You Very Much” with a picture of an actual tank. Where jeans that can be bought at the neighboring table. To add some spice, you can bleach stain some of the shirts and wash out the jeans to varying degrees.

Here are some really interesting looking t-shirts. Unfortunately, you can only purchase them online. [Tee Shirts](http://www.coolcats.fr/tee-shirts/)

Couldn’t see you from FB -> sorry, still new.

By dress more, you mean become preppier or like effortlessly cooler (like skaters and surfers stuff)?

So, I creeped on your FB pics and from those, it seems like you would be going for a more conservative style, so I’. Not going to recommend colorful shoes or anything.
To me, style in conservative dress is mostly about quality. Instead of having tons of cheap shirts, invest in pieces: polos, sweater vests, slacks, really nice jackets. It doesn’t need to be really expensive, just not crummy. To stand out as stylish though, you’ll need to look to your personality for specifics. Don’t force it; let it develop naturally.
Sorry about the lack of specifics. As a girl from a school where most guys dress sloppily, hipstery, or urban (skater or ghetto), I don’t know that much about guys clothing.

Here’s my take. A very well put together, relatively conservative outfit will usually be considered as “better looking” to the general population than something outlandish (but very “stylish”).

For example, runway styles for men are pretty ridiculous looking, but the very toned down, more conservative derivatives of those look pretty good.

Thanks for the replies. @Millancad - I’m rather conservative right now - this is exactly what I’m trying to veer away from.

@Whan - you’re right, and I don’t expect to go all out, but I definitely want something that conveys more personality than a conservative outfit can give. I’m looking to put together something that’ll turn heads and say something about me. I don’t plan on using it all the time, and’ll probably have it toned down most of the time, but still apparent. What I’m trying to get at here is something that’s definitely noticeable, and doesn’t simply fade agreeably into the backdrop.

Retro running shoes :)

Adidas, puma, and asics have some really comfy and interesting ones.

I personally like the adidas dragons.
