Need help differentiating myself

Lets someone originally went into college not knowing entirely what they wanted to do, and that this particular person was a slouch in high school, and I mean a big one. Let’s also say this guy had a hard time transitioning into college, not knowing entirely how to do study and didn’t do so great his first year.

It should be known this guy also has to work full time out of necessity.

Next, lets say that this guy finds out after taking all those level math classes, and I mean classes like arithmetic, algebra, etc. That he really likes math and he really like computers and now wants to be an electrical-computer engineer. This guy has progressed into his 3rd year of community college, about to take Differential Equations, Electric & magnetism, and Calc III.

This dudes grades aren’t that stellar, because of the hard transition he had a really rough start, he’s gotten his GPA up from a 2.7 to a 3.1 and may be a 3.2 at the end of this semester, but feels his GPA is weak for any engineering schools.

This guy does plan on finishing his degree at the CC which wont happen until next Fall and he plans on taking some GPA booster courses in the summer for good measure

but…

This guy does know how to build and program printed circuit boards from his high interest though.

Lets say this guy was to build a few electronic devices with a video of him building them and sent them to the college of engineering he wants to go to and lets them know why he’s doing this and giving his name.

Do you think this would had any sway when it comes to admissions, even though his not so stellar GPA?

Hey man I’m kind of in the same position as you except im a psych major. I had a rough start also with my JC, first year didn’t know what i wanted to do coupled with my father being diagnosed with a year and a half into JC cancer and having a stroke also a year later. All I can say do not give up and stay optimistic, I know this might not give you an answer but keep strong with what you are doing, try not to worry to much! and also I saw that you posted this about 4 days ago and hopefully this gives the thread a bump for someone who might be able to help you out.

No admissions officer wants to watch a video of someone building electronic devices. If you meet the minimum gpa for the college, just put your application in. If you are applying to a college that looks at outside activities this can be one of them and the activity can also be put into an essay. Usually the only supplemental materials are for arts, or research papers and the like.

Make sure you go in to see your CC adviser or the transfer adviser if there is a separate one.
