ok, so this has me reallllly worried
my mother just got a job teaching at a middle/high school
she's pretty good, too except one thing: SHE CAN'T CONTROL THE CLASS!!!
:(
she has the ability to teach when students are willing to learn, but her students are NOT the most well behaved.
they yell back at her, don't listen to her orders, stand on desks, throw papers out the window, etc... and she has no idea what to do!
someone please give me advice, i don't want my mom to lose her job!!!

Erm, well, what leverage does she have over the class? Can she, say, make them sit in solitary confinement (like a time out for the younger grades), or give them detention, or call their parents or something? She should do that to the greatest offenders and then threaten everyone else with it if their behavior persists.

she has tried sitting the serious offenders in a secluded area, but that has only caused the students to yell LOUDER and precluding her teaching even further.

detention i don't think is possible at that school, plus i doubt the students would listen to her anyway. i guess she could call parents though.
anyone else have any advice?

Google "classroom control teacher" for lots of suggestions.

Tell her to punch the stupidest kids in the face, and the other ones in the back of the head when they're not looking.

If they get out of control, she can always call the principal to come and have a nice little chat with them.

The trick is consequence. If she threatens to do something, she must actually carry it out.

Giving bad grades is a good way, too. Well, it's not a good way, but I worked as a teaching assistant for two years, and while it's not always nice if the kids fear you.. well, it's better than yelling and it doesn't work. I just set out this really, really hard test, curved it (well that's not allowed in some parts of the worlds) so that the 'bad guys' failed spectaculary, and told them there would only be one other test in this semester.
A trick against "I'm only missing one percent." is "No, you are missing fifty-one."

But: The first term of teaching is hard. HARD. Hard. Almost everyone has problems with discipline.

Things I learned from my mum, who is a teacher:
* Calling the principal can only help that much - sometimes it makes things worse. Like - the kids think that you yourself are too weak to carry things out. They can get quite nasty.
* Calling the parents has proven to be effective in some cases. The trick is not to insult them, but to get them on your side - "Your son is failing my class and I do not want that." "WHAT?" "Well, his grades are falling, and his attitude doesn't help..."

I noticed your location says New York, is she teaching at a NYC public school?

no, in western new york though it is a public school
