Thank you for the number, momnipotent. I think I will use it. My mom is in better shape than me, but she can't feel most of her feet, so darkness, uneven surfaces, or climbing are risky. I don't want any mishaps. Thankyou so much for the offer of your guys. My brother is now probably going to join us, so hopefully we'll be okay moving out! I'm so glad you got to go to the concert. My son plays the double bass. He said a plane flew overhead just at the dying heartbeats (bass plucks?) at the end of the song. He can't wait to hear the recording. He is having a great time. I cannot wait to hear them. Your son plays tuba? I guess your house may be a little quieter right now, too? I can't believe I'm saying this, but I actually sometimes miss the sound of his midnight practicing!

thenosam- the plane flyover was handled well by the conductor and the musicians! I kind of forgot about it! I do miss my son. He is the tuba player for the YAO. His roommate plays doublebass- from California. I have some photos of the kids at the Ozawa during the concert and would be happy to email some to you if you pm me with your email address. The concert hall was really stunning.

momnipotent - I am not sure if I pm-ed you correctly. I am kind of new to this, so let me know if you didn't get my email address. Thanks!

Got it thenosam- I am waiting for pics from my aunt...she photographed the Ozawa kids before the concert started and I will then send them to you. I hope to have them by tomorrow. I will go ahead and mail you a couple that I took.

thenosam-pics are in the mail.

Any other folks with kids at Tanglewood....I have a few pics from the concert and would be happy to email them if you pm me with your email address.

Is it worse than Interlochen food?

I have not eaten at Interlochen but, as a BUTI parent who made the mistake of eating lunch in the cafeteria that the students use, I can confirm that it is among the worst institutional food I have experienced. We took daughter and several very grateful friends out for dinner that evening, considering it a mission of mercy.

Agreed...the food at BUTI is quite possibly the worst institutional food on the planet. I made the mistake (the first year) of staying for the picnic. You would think they would at least try to do a better job for the parents who stayed. They didn't. To be honest, I didn't eat ANY of the food...it was that bad. Perhaps that is why my son was so happy to have me visit him there (always included a "food fix"). I will add, however, that he says the food at Aspen isn't terrific either, but he says it is MUCH better than BUTI. He never complained about the food at the Eastern Music Festival...it must have been ok.

Can't answer the culinary question directly, but if someone could fill in the blanks, we could approximate the level of cuisine at Tanglewood.

D dined at Peabody pre-fall 2006 and said the food was bad, about equivalent to Interlochen (New Peabody food much improved). So if someone from Peabody can compare the "old" Peabody cuisine to BUTI, we'll have a relative benchmark...

OK...I'm really scared now. DS says the food at Tanglewood is not that bad. He has even tried some tofu dish this summer. I guess that we might need a yardstick to measure the difference between MY cooking and Tanglewood at this point. Shudder......

Ouch... momnipotent: I don't think I would have admitted to that in public!! :-)

Momni...I'm a TERRIBLE cook. Even with that, my kid thought the food at BUTI was awful....just awful. He ate salad and cold cereal for two summers. He said everything else was inedible.

I would have to doubt the culinary opinions of any one admitting to eating tofu. ;)

D told me that BUTI is really a fat camp in disguise. She says that with the hills and the terrible food the average weight loss is 20 pounds! There is a rumor that a girl lost 30 pounds last summer.
I am about to send my second food box full of power bars because D does not have any weight to loose!!

Yes, vicariousparent, my son said BUTI food really was much worse than Interlochen's. He went to BUTI in 2005, so maybe things are better now. Son suspects that the chef fired from BUTI now cooks at Eastman!

It probably appears from my comments that he is a little obsessive about food, and that's true. An 18 year old distance running trumpet player needs a lot of fuel. Happy to report that Sewanee Summer Music Festival (where he's been for the past several weeks) gets a Mobil 4 star equivalent rating for music food!

Singermom1------I can't stop laughing about your DDs suspiscion of weight loss motives from the BUTI program. Funny stuff.

DS texted me earlier today that he was selected to play in the Shed with "James Freakin Levine"!!!!!! With no further details of course....anyone know what type of performance or practice this might be?

Wow - what an honor! I just got a quick word from my son last night that his chamber concert went well. That's all I know. I guess that one would not involve a tuba!

DS finally textedback that he was going to be playing with a TMC group in the shed under direction of Levine. Lucky.

That is so cool, momnipotent!!!! He is totally lucky!!! James "Freakin" Levine!! Wow!!!
I have to laugh about the food complaints...S and his roommates have gone to the grocery store several times and are stocked up (third floor...in case anyone out there is hungry). When I called today he was on his way to Betty's (again). Last night was an ice cream run. I had to send out his single trumpet case because he said that carrying the triple over hill and dale in the humidity was doing him in...but I don't think he's missed many meals....
