Hi
I'm an asian guy who's trying to get into US universities.
I currently have an SAT score of 2080
CR 600
MA 800
GR 680 (Essay 10)

and my gpa isn't so good.. about 3.0/4.0

i'm thinking of going to university of minnesota-twin cities and major biology.
would i be able to get some scholarships? or is it absolutely impossible for an international student to get scholarships?

and can you give me some advices on choosing a university? thanks.

P.S i don't really want to go to a real good uni, but just a decent one that would offer me scholarships.

I’m an international student (asian) as well. Nice to meet you. Although this isn’t an SAT query…so it may have to be moved…

My counselor has told me that while it is not absolutely impossible for an int’l student to get a scholarship, it is difficult. This is especially so because of the tanking economy- in fact, it has become more difficult for citizen students to get them as well. The problem is that for an int’l student, the fact that you even apply for a scholarship can influence whether you get in or not. So often counselors advise students to not apply for scholarships from the school.

This is mostly in context of private universities, but difficulties exist with state ones as well. Public universities are funded through the government, and the means are essentially taxpayer money. Citizens’ taxpayer money- which is automatically a red light for int’l students. You’ll need to research the school to find more info, though.

Look around you for scholarship programs (for example, a corporation-based one), so that you don’t necessarily have to look to the college to get one. Winning one is a plus on your resume as well.

Choosing a university? Well it seems that you know what you want already. Try looking for schools that are strong in your field of interest, and maybe look up student life as well and see if that would suit you. You’re going to spend four years there- you might as well enjoy it. ;)

there are 8 colleges (or as far as I know) in the US that provide need-blind FAs to international students (which means that they admit students regardless of their financial needs, which is good for us since our asking for FA would otherwise decrease our chances of acceptance).

Princeton, Harvard, Yale, MIT, Amherst, Middlebury (I heard another news saying otherwise, though), Williams, Dartmouth.

Even these 8 colleges are known for dropping students based on their FA requests, according to some myths.

Other colleges that provide need-based FAs, naturally, prefer rich students who they(colleges) don’t have to worry about quitting in the middle of a year due to lack of tuition.

With times being tough and all, money matters a lot on college admissions.
But like I always say, nothing is impossible.
