I am a 25 year old student who will be transferring to Cal Poly in the fall. The application is asking if i want to fill out my parents information (income and all that). My question is- will filling out my parents information cause me to recieve less money or vice-vera? My parents do not make a whole lot of money (between 120-130k). I also made about 8k working last year. My parents are not willing to help me out much with school, so i am relying on this to pay for most of my education. Any help with this is greatly appreciated.
Also if you have any tips for filling out the application as an independent (in terms of increasing my chances for what i may receive) please let me know!
I don’t think it will make a difference but to put things in perspective, 120-130k is over twice the national median family income. Your family is not in the “doesn’t make a whole lot of money” bin- especially in terms of financial aid.
Since you’re older than 24, you do not need to report your parents’ income. However, there’s a “money paid on your behalf” question where you must report any support provided by them (i.e. bills on your name paid by them, including college expenses).
