I’m at a big dilemma - I’m stuck between two majors and I’m starting my junior year, so I need to pick quickly. I was originally going to major in biology because I was planning to go into either medicine or pharmacy. However, I’m also really fascinated by international relations and have always dreamed of working abroad or at a government agency. I also like how versatile the degree is. However, I’m terrified of investing in an international relations degree and ending up unemployed with debt. Unfortunately, I can’t do premed alongside international relations because of the number of requirements I’d have to get done within two years. So, I’m kind of at a standstill and feeling super lost. For reference, I’ll be going to either USC or the University of Michigan.
You don’t have to major in biology to go into medicine or pharmacy. Many times, when students transfer, it takes them a bit longer than four years to finish their BA because of requirements at the new college. So unless it would be a significant financial burden on your family, consider taking the extra time to complete the pre-med requirements if you need to.
You can end up unemployed with debt with any major, including biology.
