Considering Major Change, Seeking Advice

Hello All.

I've facing something of a personal crisis and am hoping to get some kind of feedback to help me cope. My situation is that I am in the middle of my sophomore year at a fairly prestigious university. I have carried out my first year and a half with the intentions of graduating as a History and International Studies double major. However, I have come to heavily question the value of such majors. I would not necessarily confine myself to careers restricted in those fields (though I am interested in embassy work, among other possibilities), but I still think that I could put a focus on something more substantial for my college time. Similarly, I have often found some of the classes to be somewhat underwhelming. That said, in the interest of expanding both my appeal and my options, I am considering switching to a major in Biology, with a minor in History since I am one class away from completing the requirements (Specifically Biology because it is the only feasible science I could switch into). Like my previous focuses, this would not necessarily be for the sake of a career in Biology, but to expand my horizons and options. I am interested in the field, and based on the courses I have already taken, I think I could do fairly well, though it will certainly be a struggle. I think it is further worth mentioning that I am taking Chinese language courses, out of interest and as a resume builder, and the transition would not change this.

So, with all of this considered, does this seem like a wise or advisable move? Is there anyone with experience with either degrees that can offer their perspective? Do you think this will be a better use of my schooling and perhaps increase my appeal to employers in general? Any insight would be terribly appreciated.

Honestly, an International Relations major probably has better job prospects than Biology.

If you can flip it into a MD degree, then it may worth it. Why not just move into the business arena, especially if you can become proficient at Chinese? Why make $250k as a MD with tons of student loan debt, when you can make millions in business?

Just be aware of the massive amounts of student loan debt that it takes to become a MD, which will absolutely limit your options of what type of physician you’ll likely become, unless of course you can get a full ride for free as a MD/PhD. Also keep in mind the changing political climate, health care system, huge amounts of red tape, insurance issues, yadda yadda yadda that all come along with being a MD.

If you still want to stick with biology and become fluent in Chinese, you could always move to China and get a job, I"m sure there’s plenty of openings there for dual English/Chinese speaking individuals with degrees from prestigious US institutions.

an international relations degree for sure has better prospects than biology. Biology is a stepping stone degree for Healthcare professional school otherwise it is almost totally useless.
