Need help! Urgent!

Hi guys, I'm running out of time and I need help.

So here's the deal. I'm going into my sophomore majoring in Accounting. I currently attend St. John's University which I truly feel is NOT the place for me. In fact, the only reason I am attending is because it was the "best" academically out of the few colleges who did accept me; due to my lackluster GPA in high school.

I'm located in New York City and I'm trying to transfer to the following

SUNY Albany, Buffalo, Stonybrook, Binghamton
CUNY Baruch, Queens, Hunter, Manhattan, (2 more choices which I have yet to decide upon)
Private colleges - BU, Syracuse, (still in the process of finding more)

My grades are as follows

HS GPA - 2.8 (I don't believe they take this into consideration seeing as I have 27 credits)

College GPA - Overall 3.18

First semester 2.67 (Was taking religion classes, philosophy, "Discover New York", and other core classes that, frankly, did not interest me at all)

Second semester 3.64 (Was taking business orientated classes such as, accounting, economics, business law, and your run of the mill classes, English, and history.)

Here's the problems,

I'm already late for applying to Buffalo (called em today, and they told me that there are still spots available, and that I have a good shot)

The deadline for Albany is July 1, so I'll have to rush this as well, but like Buffalo, they told me I have a good shot. However their Accounting program requires a 3.25 cumulative. They told me to explain my situation regarding the first semester high school to college transitional phase, and my personal issues with the classes I had.) They also said if I do not get into the accounting program, they will accept me with an intent in accounting (I believe thats what he said.)

It is too late to apply for Stonybrook, Binghamton, and the CUNY's because unfortunately, I missed their deadline.

My university expects me to pay the tuition by July 27th or else there will be a late charge of $200. Albany, and Buffalo will not get back to me by then... so I don't know what to do.

They are also telling me that transfers will NOT be able to use a fee waiver unless they have an associates degree. So my question is should I just pay for the application because I'm afraid the fee waiver will delay my application further. (They also said I can try to fax my parents income form along with the fee waiver application and wait for approval for the fee waiver and they might have some leniency)

My last and final question - What do I do now? Should I stay one more semester at St. John's and bring my GPA up and then apply for transfer (but I do not think they will even see my fall 11 GPA because I must apply before the semester ends), or should I apply for Albany / Buffalo and attend if I get in. I want to emphasize that I want to dorm very much. I believe its a college experience that everyone should experience. So dorming is very significant for me. However if I decide to attend Baruch I am able to attend for FREE and I'm eligible to receive $2,500 every semester. Baruch is reputable for its business programs so its an excellent choice. Which college should I choose? Albany has a decent accounting program as well, but I'm pretty sure Baruch is better. I'm not too sure on Buffalo though. I know Binghamton is the best out of my choices for accounting but I'm not too sure I'll even get in due to my grades. Or my last resort would be to halt everything and wait till August 1st until colleges open their admission for the Spring 2012 semester and try my chances then? I fear that if I jump the gun too early on Albany or Buffalo (granted I'm accepted) just for the dorming experience but unfortunately they have mediocre accounting programs compared to Baruch. If later on I'm unhappy with the university and want to transfer again, that will lead to a bunch of other problems with what credits they will accept or not.

Thank you guys in advance for any help!

guys i forgot to mention if i DO get accepted into albany or buffalo for fall 2011 i might have a terrible schedule as opposed to my “good” schedule i will have next semester here at st johns.

I think you should wait another semester. Because you’re applying late, you may have missed the financial aid deadline at some of those schools. You could stay at your current school now, bring up your gpa and then transfer. Unless you are that miserable/don’t need a lot of scholarships/whatever and apply anyway just to see where you get in this late.

Good luck!

Hi Shannon, thank you for your response. You present a good point about financial aid deadlines. I think I’m going to apply for the Spring 2012 semester. But I have a question regarding if the Universities will even see my Fall 2011 GPA because most colleges have a deadline right when the start of the semester rolls around. Any help?

The registrar had sent out my transcripts already. Will that be a problem? Multiple colleges receiving my transcript but no application?

It is not too late to apply for CUNY schools.
After the deadline, they have direct admissions where you bring our transcripts and will be notify if you got accepted or not.

Here is the link:[Direct Admission: Fall 2011 - Undergraduate Admissions - CUNY](http://www.cuny.edu//admissions/undergraduate/prepare/directadmission.html)

Notice that Hunter and John Jay are closed. Because they do not really follow the CUNY process. But you will still have the chance of Baruch and Queens. When you put Manhattan, I hope you were not inferring to the CC.

I will say this. Your are in-state. You might be the lucky NYers who would have their financial aid pay for all the tution and them some. Some people get book money before the semesters starts. But remember, you get what you pay for. Depending on your major and the college you go to, there could be lack of resources so I would really investigate the schools if I were you.

I check the SUNY website and their admissions is rolling.

You can also do what I am doing now. I am at a CUNY school OOS and I am transferring in state because of financial issues. So I have already applied and added the schhols for FAFSA and I am going to compare the schools and pick the best solution for me. For me, since it is after the deadline, I would have an idea in mid July.

Thank you stargurl! I had no idea CUNY’s had a direct admission.

“You may apply for Fall 2011 admission in-person through the Direct Admission process.”

So I just show up to the college of my choice and ask for direct admission? Also will I be given an opportunity to explain my grades?

Good luck with your transfers stargurl.

Yup. Just being a transcript. But they would preferred that you send it to Admissions Center if you might transfer to a different CUNY. You might also have to bring your high school transcript to get exempt for the CUNY assessment test. For HS, they would base it on your SAT scors. For college, if you have taken a English and/or Math course and gotten a C- or better, you will be exempt. I have done this twice. Look at the Baruch website and see what are their standards of being exempt for the assessment test. I will say that when you go, plan on doing nothing and go early. When I done this, I waited for 2 to 4 hours to know I got accepted. But hey, its better than 4 months.

Good luck to you too.

So say I’m not transferring to a different CUNY. Can I just bring my HS transcript along with my official college transcript and ID? Also will I be able to talk to someone to explain the discrepancy between my first semester GPA / second semester ?

You do not have to be from CUNY to transfer. Not only bring official transcripts but also bring the $70 fee.
Honestly, your GPA is fine. WHen you transfer to CUNY, people with associates degrees need a 2.0 and outsides need a 2.3 so you are way ahead of everyone else.

Is the 70 dollar fee subjected to each visit? Or can I pay $70 and do direct admission for multiple colleges?

Again, thank you so much for your help!

no, no no. It is the application fee. Sorry I forgot to put that.
When you go in and hand in all the transcripts, they will tell you to wait for the admissions counselor. When you are there, they will have the CUNY application and then they will ask you if you are applying for mutiple schools. Make sure if Baruch you’re first choice, that it is in the application as number one choice. The $70 application fee is for all schools so you can to one or five for the same cost of $70.

Make sure you go next week. Baruch ends their direct admission on June 30!

So when I get there, they’ll hand me a CUNY form, which ill have to fill out and list all the cunys that I’m going to direct admission for (baruch and queens) and then I pay the $70 fee to Baruch and it’ll suffice for Queens as well?

Yes I know the deadline is soon  I’m still waiting on my university to send me my transcripts argh :(

Once again, I can’t thank you enough for all your help :)

actually when I went they had the application only for the school. I fill it out and handed them my transcripts and application fee money when they ask for it. I waited for the admissions counselor to call me. When they call me, we will be seated by a computer and they will have the CUNY application up. (They have to do it because if you log on now and try to apply only Spring 2012 comes up). The application will show your name and address. They will ask if everything is correct. There is a page where they have majors and colleges. That is where they will ask you is there any other schools you are planning to go? That is where you will say Queens College and make sure it is number 2. Apparently, some schools would not except you if the school is not rank #1. After they submot the application you will hear:

Congradulations and Welcome to Baruch College. :)

Then you will probably be told to wait for a letter in the mail to register for classes.

Checklist

HS Transcript
College Transcript
$70 Fee
ID

When I arrive the building ill ask for the direct admission office. They’ll direct me to an admission counsler, hand him/her my transcripts, then ill go on the computer and fill out some forms, choose baruch as first (do I choose Queens as first when I apply direct admission at Queens or will they see that they’re #2). Then press submit and a counsler will review my application.

That’s what I think is going to happen haha. Sound about right?

Grrr… they don’t mail on weekends and I still don’t have my transcript. :(

Well if anyone is still checking this thread, I just found out that I will be unable to apply for Baruch because I did not take a math course, and for Queens College I need 30 credits for them to only review my college transcript… I have 27. So they’ll need my SAT scores and HS transcripts. They rejected me when I applied as a HS senior… so undoubtedly this will have a negative effect on my admission.

Thank you stargurl for all your help!
