Need help with major discussion with S!

Oh, if it's any consolation to hear about procrastinators-- S started to really look at all the college guides right around FEBRUARY! of his senior year. What a time to get interested in comparing schools.

I had to bite my tongue to not say 'why didn't you do that earlier?" I guess if he had found a place that was super interesting, we would have re-grouped, but he didn't change his mind.

Sometimes when kids are early in the process, it's easier for them to identify what they don't want in a school rather than what they do want. This approach worked for our family.

Because DS scored high enough on his PSAT to be a probably NM commended student, he had to select two colleges for NMSC recommendation. We spoke about it and he narrowed down the choices in a reasonable manner (the alleged "cute" girls at one helped!).

I think he'll be more focused after seeing 3 schools in June, and I'm finding that me backing off even a little has really helped our conversations. Thanks for all the insight, and I'm happy to know I'm not alone.

Here is my suggestion:
I created index cards with each of the following on them.
(We are in Chicago, and we're Jewish, so some of the cards are written from the perspective of what we consider near and far and what religious preference might be an important consideration. You can easily adapt this list to your own needs.)

I had my rising sophs each take these cards and sort them into piles:
Must Have
Would Really Like to Have
Nice, but Not Critical
Don't Care
Don't Want, But Could Live With
Absolutely Don't Want At All

From what they put in their top piles, that opened the discussion as to what interests them -- and that way you can share your knowledge, but from the perspective of what fits their expressed needs.

Here's the list:
