Here’s the prompt (250 word limit):
Everyone belongs to many different communities and/or groups defined by (among other things) shared geography, religion, ethnicity, income, cuisine, interest, race, ideology, or intellectual heritage. Choose one of the communities to which you belong, and describe that community and your place within it.
This is difficult for me because me and my family don’t belong to a community. Yeah, we live somewhere, but we just moved there and feel no connection to the people around us (we’re also in a large city). I’ve moved homes and schools countless times so have not grown up in a community based around geography or school or other families. I live with just my mom (and younger brother and sister), which is very rare in our area. We make average to below average income (again, rare). We are rather generic white people, and although my mom is second generation German we have little ties to that culture. We’re not religious. My mom has a generic government desk job. So, the only community I can really think of is my family (I have no extended family - just me, my mom, my bro, and my sister). Is this okay to write about? It’s something I can write passionately about and is really the only “community to which I feel I belong”.
