Need info on Parsons Photo

Okay, if you recognize my username, you might remember that my daughter applied to several art schoold for photo. She has changed her mind back and forth(anxiety).

Now, she has been accepted to SVA and Parsons. She is leaning toward Parsons because she likes the idea of fashion photography as opposed to fine art photo.
I am a little clueless about Parsons - have read and searched the boards but am not seeing what I am looking for.

Please tell me everything you know about Parsons. Housing? Tuition assistance? Photo program? Facilites and Eqiuipment? Foundation year? Just everything...she needs food for thought.

Thanks so much!

one more thing specifically - what is the deal with taking other classes at the schools connected to The New School for design. Possibly at Lang?
I heard someone say they are dual-majoring in photo and cultural studies. How is that?
Sorry, I am such an idiot with all this. I appreciate your help.

One can receive just as much fashion photography training at SVA as at Parsons. Parsons is about $10K a year more in tuition also.

brokenapertures,

I know we have spoken before about SVA. In your opinion, does Parsons offer anything more than SVA?

lindab, Parsons may be 10k more expensive, but they also give over twice as much in financial aid. SVA gives horrible financial aid and your d will find herself in a lot more debt than a Parsons student. Both schools are great schools. SVA has better facilities and better faculty but Parsons is much more selective, competitive, and most of all much more intensive. Many SVA accepted freshman have a very poor body work. Competition is key especially in art schools. It all depends on what you think is worth your money.

SVA is not TOO terrible with scholarships...it all depends on how talented your daughter is and if she makes good grades. I know two people personally who have received full scholarships to SVA based on their Silas Rhodes scholarship application. On the other hand, I have talked to a recent graduate of Parson photo who told me that Parsons is not worth spending the money. I will give you his exact quote. He even goes as far to suggest going to F.I.T.

His message starts here:

I would recommend that you go to F.I.T. (if coming to NYC) or another lower priced technical school elsewhere. The thing is, you'll learn alot about Classical art and Design (at Parsons and other high priced schools) which are great but, through research, I've found that Other schools as well as Parsons don't teach a thing about the technical aspects of photography and business. Luckily I went to a very technical school in Florida (1st then transfered) that was great and cost litterally 1.5% of what school costs in NYC.

At Parsons, I was frequently frustrated with the lack of caring from professors and staff. They just didn't care about the students and The ****ed me off due to the fact that Myself and other students were paying so much (about42,000/year and that price is rising every year about $2-$3000). It's smart to go to a school that is more technical and teaches you about business.

You, I'm sure, want to make money from your photos and can learn the artistic side on your own for less money. In the end you're paying for the fact that you're getting an education in NYC with the Parsons name. To alot of people that is a great credential which people respect. You have to ask yourself if you wasnt to go into debt at least $90,000-$120,000 after 4 years for that schools' name. I also graduated in an economic recession where literally no one is hiring. Seriously no one. Photographers here, and nationwide, are asking for interns and free help on Craig'slist.com.

so yeah, there you go. lol.

And no, I don't think Parsons offers any more than SVA...other than VERY direct fashion exposure.
