So i'm a sophomore in high school and I'll be taking the SAT II for chemistry. I've done chem honors, done pretty well (compared to everyone else) but i browsed around cc and saw that many people took ap chem and then the test. I wont be doing ap chem so how do i ensure that i get a decent score? I'm aiming for a 770+. I've started using the Barron's book and did decent on the tests (640 and 680) should i keep using Barron's or should i jump over to another book? Thanks.

Yes, most people would take the subject test while taking AP class. There may be some topics not covered in your chem honors yet. If you can find it out from the syllabus of Chem subject test, you should be able to self study for that part.

I took the test several months after taking chemistry honors over the summer. I used a Barron’s book and reviewed it a week before, got a 760. I’m taking it again after taking AP Chem, but the Barron’s book is pretty extensive. Make sure you go over experimental procedures.

Use Barrons. Its the best. Study the material you dont go over first.

All topics on the test would be covered in an Honors Chem course. The SATs are designed to test high school curriculum topics. If you know your stuff, you’ll get a good score.

I have one more month (roughly) to study for it, what do you guys recommend i do during this month? I have like 70ish pages left of barron’s reading. I’ll probably re-read it after i’m done. I havent taken any new practice tests though.

Thanks

Alright guys, just got my results a few minutes ago. I got a 750 which is pretty mediocre for me but i’ll take it. So what i did was intensely study sparknotes and did a lot of barron’s practice tests. Sparknotes really helped.

I actually never had a high school chem course and self studied it for an 800. Use Barron’s and Kaplan for SAT Chemistry. They are SO good. Also, if I could redo something, it would be not ignoring some superfluous information in Barrons. Some info seems just silly and pointless for a chemistry test, but all the questions I missed on the test (at least the ones I think I missed) were in the section in Barrons I deemed “stupid.”

I think for Chemistry, the one thing you need to keep away from are the Sparknotes practice tests. Sparknotes notes are good but their tests are killer; they totally destroy confidence and convince everyone that the best they can do is a low 700.

I was only in chem honors and didn’t expect an amazing result, but this was pretty ok. I agree that the sparknotes practice tests look killer but i just read the online book and used an annotation software to make notes directly on the computer. the night before, i did a practice test and looked at all the annotations, the only real mistakes i made were ones that were really stupid and careless (like what side the nonmetals are on the periodic table and sig figs -.-). The only thing i didn’t know was “what is a complex ion?” which i never saw anywhere. But it was pretty good i like my score.
