I’m a california CC transfer student without a GED or high school diploma and I already got accepted to UC irvine. I didn’t need a high school diploma or GED if I completed all their transfer requirements which I did and my acceptance won’t be revoked, but I need some advice in regards to financial aid or some kind of private loan. My family income is too high for me to be considered for FAFSA so I just wanna know if a private loan from a bank or something would require me to have a high school diploma even though I’ve clearly shown that I have the academic ability to last in college. Any advice would help…THANK YOU
A loan from a bank will require that you have a cosigner with sufficient collateral to take the loan…since you don’t have that. A HS diploma is not required.
Will your parents cosign a loan for you?
Also, fafsa is a financial aid application form. The fafsa is used to determine your eligibility for federally funded need based aid. Fafsa doesn’t give money out.
As a CA resident, your eligibility for the Calgrant would be an important thing. I gather you are not eligible for this? Your family income would need to be less than $80,000 a year, and you would need to have demonstrated need. But the Calgrant applications were due March 2.
Also, there is something you would have needed to do if you did not take the Calgrant within those two years you attended the CC.
I’m sure the Calgrant experts will chime in.
Did you complete the fafsa? If nothing else, you are eligible to take a $7500 Direct Loan as a third year college student…or $6500 if you are a second year student…which does not require a cosigner.
Right, you can’t be ‘considered for’ FAFSA since fafsa is an application form only. (Free Application For Student Aid). But to apply for University aid which you might be eligible for you need to file FAFSA. Did you not file?
So if income is too high for federal Pell Grant you can get a Student loan by filling out FAFSA (7,500 each year)… Also your parent could apply for Parent Plus loans if you filed FAFSA. You can’t get a bank loan on your own. Only a parent can or with a cosigner and they won’t care about your HS diploma, only the credit worthiness of your cosigner so they know there is someone who can pay the loan if you don’t.
