I know it is a bit late to talk about the June 5th Sat score. Anyways, CR 680, Writing 690 (9 essay) and 600 Math. My question is, am I in good shape for my age? I just turned 14 and my parents stated that they are very proud of me, but personally I choked. Can anyone provide insight into how your score progressed from middle school through H.S.

I know that I’m not a senior member here at CC, but I thought I’d give my two cents worth anyway.

A score of 1970, whatever your age, is a pretty good score. For a fourteen year old, however, it just screams a crazy amount of potential. You have until the beginning of your senior year to retake the SATs, which is near three years of preparation. As for your original question, you seem to be right on track to me.

It’s a shame on my part, really. I wish I had been better informed of the SATs before I entered high school! I would have probably taken a little bit more initiative then.

Cheers.

Why only until the beginning of Senior year? I’m a rising senior and am starting SAT classes in late aug. Now i’m nervous!!

Most very-high scorers have never taken an SAT class, and I certainly do not generally recommend it. See my guide for more on this as well as lots of other information: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/sat-preparation/955109-silverturtles-guide-sat-admissions-success.html.

the SAT is designed for people who have gone through the rigours of HS. Therefore, you may not yet have developed the CR, Math (especially), and writing skills needed to do well on the SAT.

When you go through HS and pick up more skills, you will likely see your score greatly increase. This is especially the case if you haven’t taken Algebra II and Precalculus yet.

wait, you’re still in MS?

get off of CC! you don’t belong in this hellhole yet! :-)

^ There is no pre-calculus on the SAT, though I agree with the rest of what you wrote.

Thanks Silverturtle! I was about to question the potential ROI on SAT tutoring classes. My Dad speaks very highly of you (WatchfulEye) and he thinks your guide is masterful… :)

Thanks for the advice silverturtle, i’ve been going through your guide and answer the questions and doing pretty well. I’m just nervous about my idiocy of waiting until basically the beginning of senior year to study for the SAT. My parents also do not trust my abilities to self study successfully.

I went from a 1960 (first PSAT) to a 2270 (first and only SAT), no studying required. It just went up naturally as I progressed through high school. Really, you’ll be just fine. I realize that those aren’t stratospheric scores, but if you add studying into that routine, you should be hitting 2250+, easy - it’s only a matter of time.

ksarmand, what age/grade did you sit for the PSAT?

Similarly, I went from 181 freshman PSAT to 2290 Junior SAT.

massive (300 point +) increases from, say, sophomore or junior year to first semester senior year are very, very uncommon. If you were a junior with this score looking to score 2200+, you’d have some serious work ahead of you. But you’re not. You’re not even in HS. You haven’t learned all that you’ll need yet, very likely.

^^The 196 was from freshman year (age 13). I did not take the PSAT again until junior year.

everyone is so smart!!!

^^…er…

That you haven’t learned a good deal of the skills required to ace the SAT with ease. For instance, chances are that you haven’t covered (in-depth, that is) many of the types of passages in the CR section on the SAT in a classroom setting. Exposure over a long period of time really helps your score.

That’s a great score for an eighth grader. My 7th grade score was in the 1900s as well and I scored a 2400 as a junior.

^See, OP? There’s hope. :)

Jersey, how did you do it? Is it mainly natural progression or a whole lot of shoveling “dark snow”?
Sorry, I am told my sense of humor goes well beyond my years.

^^Oh, nothing. Your statement just left me at a loss for words.

^^^ I’m just feeling discouraged by all the high scores on CC. I’m a rising senior and i just scored a 1580 on the CollegeBoard practice test. Albeit no preparation but… ugh.

^If you didn’t prepare for the exam, perhaps you should next time.
