I am currently a junior, planning on applying to college for Fall 2007. I am interested in studying psychology or foreign language, and have chosen some of the best schools out there:

Northwestern U
U Penn
Stanford
Berkeley
Columbia U

However, chances are if I don't get into one of these schools, I won't get into any of them, and I have hardly any safeties! My only safety is University of Michigan (I'm a Michigan resident, so I'm sure I'd get in).

Currently I am taking 3 AP and 1 AT course, plus French III and a required gym class. Next semester I am planning on dual-enrolling in a course at the local community college.

My extra-curriculars:
*President--TC West Book Club
*National Art Honors Society (may be Treasurer this year)
*Young Women for Change and Youth Advisory Council
*French Club
*Debate

Does anyone have any recommendations for safeties that I will be sure to get into?

First off, Michigan should be really high on your list!!! Michigan probably has the best psych program nation-wide after Stanford, and its language programs are also top-notch.

Second, the schools on your list aren't all very good in psych. Stanford, Penn, and Berkeley (UCLA actually has a better program) are very good, but Columbia and Northwestern aren't nearly as good.

For safeties:
University of Illinois
University of Minnesota
University of Washington
University of Wisconsin-Madison
University of Indiana
Ohio State University
University of Rochester
Purdue University
University of Southern California
Penn State University

For matches:
UNC Chapel Hill
Carnegie Mellon University
Cornell University
University of Chicago
University of Virginia
Johns Hopkins University
Brown University
New York University

For reaches:
Yale University
Duke University
Princeton University
Harvard University

Don't put University of Southern California as a safety. It is fairly competitive, at par with UCLA. Move it to a match, depending on your stats.

How can you give any suggestions without knowing some stats? Without a GPA and real or estimated (based on real practice test results) SAT/ACT we really can't help you.

an expensive big state school in california over a bargain big state school in michigan (in-state)? berkeley is the THE top public university, but i'm pretty sure michigan would provide a similar experience. still, i did meet a few californians at ann arbor. couldn't figure that out.

You are from Traverse City.......NMC is in your city and a safety for you. I don't know what HS you are coning out of but I'll guess it is not Interlochen. I don't know of any other highly recognized schools in that city so keep that in mind as you list the reach versus safety schools. W/O more information on your stats is not relevant to comment your ability to get into ANY school. Who helped you with your list......school counselor?

I just did some research on who was best in the programs I'm looking at. I am most interested in a big city atmosphere, w/many opportunities for internships (that's where Columbia comes in).

As for stats...
My current GPA is 3.945, although I don't know what it will be at the end of this year. I just took the PSAT (I'm a junior) so I don't know my current average on that...

I agree that SATs would help but I will mention some schools with a City environment & great internships that are a notch down in selectivity level from your reaches:
