I'm a new high school graduate. I'm interested in Computer/Information Systems and Cyber Security but I also really like the idea of Film Production. I just need advice on what I should do. I am considering Full Sail Unv. for the Film Production degree but I know its not regionally accredited which I see as a problem and the tuition is pretty high. I live in Pensacola Florida and I'm considering going to Pensacola State University to get my core classes done with and get my grades up so I am more appealing to a public college/university

My High School Grades and Academics:
Weighted GPA: 2.63
Honors Classes: English 2, 3, and 4
Biology, Physical Science
Psychology
Economics, US Government, American History, World History

I was on the ROTC Drill team for one year and I played football for 3 years and ran Track and Field for 2 years. I know some places like to see extracurricular activities.

I never took the SAT but i took the ACT and my scores were as follows:
Composite: 27
English: 25
Mathematics: 20 (Worst Subject)
Reading: 36
Science: 25
Writing Portion: 9 out of 12

I just need some help because I just feel so swamped and confused. SO many community colleges and private and public colleges/universities, all with different requirements, tuition costs, financial aid help or lack thereof, location, regional vs national accreditation, degrees, etc. and I just need some serious help. Any info helps. Names of colleges, the route I should take (2 years at community college to get grades up then transfer to a 4-year, straight to a 4-year, etc.), anything helps.

I would recommend that you apply to a cc, see how difficult college work is compared to high school, get your grades up, and re-take the ACT. The reading score is terrific. Usually people who want to go into cybersecurity are going to be strong in math and compsci. You don’t speak about compsci or film production experience in your post; do you have any experience with either of them? How are you with languages? do you like history? I’m wondering if you wouldn’t be better served majoring in a field that requires good reading and writing skills. Could you marry that to your interest in security, some kind of intelligence analyst or something like that. Just speculating, OP. Could you tell us why you’re interested in cybersecurity?

Some/many colleges will not take an ACT tested while the student is in college. Usually once the student has take two years of CC the stats and grades from HS don’t matter.

good point, @ErinsDad. Get that ACT up before entering the cc, or don’t do it at all and depend for your return to a 4yr on your cc grades.

You do not necessarily need to take the CC route. Your ACT is good enough for Florida State. It is you GPA which is the problem.

What to do?

Apply to Florida State, they might take you despite the GPA because of the athletics and ROTC.

Apply to Pensacola State College, as your safety.

Apply to University of West Florida. I bet they will take you (average ACT is 23, average GPA is not high either). Probably a better choice than PSC. Also has ROTC, if you are interested.

Consider applying to a couple of other state colleges such as Florida Gulf Coast (average ACT is less than 22)

Apply to Full Sail if you wish. If you get in, can afford it and like it… then maybe go. Although not regionally accredited, it is nationally accredited. That should not be a problem.

Apply to at least five colleges, maybe six or seven. Of those you get accepted to, pick the one which has best combination of what you like and can afford.

Actually national accredidation is a huge problem if the OP were to transfer schools at any time. Even most community colleges do not accept credits earned at a nationally accredited institution which means the OP would need to retake all of his courses, but without financial aid.

@whenwhen
Thanks, I did not know that.
