This is the great part of going to college – you get to make the rules yourself. Why read a book on surviving college when you can create your own mental book? Just from being in college, I can tell you that it’s better to live and learn than to spend your whole time being skeptical about doing a ton of things because of some book you read.

All the major things you should and shouldn’t do can be determined merely based on your instinct.

I agree than jumping into a situation is a good (often the best) way to learn about it, but sometimes a few quick reads or tip lists can’t hurt, and can prevent screwups people wouldn’t otherwise have anticipated.

Cutting Corners by Justin Rich is a great book for how to handle those occasional classes that just seem to get in the way of more important things… I wouldn’t recommend using it for classes you actually want to get a lot out of, but if you’re just trying to get through something without it stressing you out or wasting your time, you should definitely read it.

Cal Newport’s books are excellent. For practical stuff like getting along with roommates, Ilike Harlan Cohen’s books.
