Does anyone think Northeastern would match an offer given from Boston University? Has anyone asked for more money and what was the outcome? They gave us a great package but we need $5k more.
It won’t hurt to ask. If your student was accepted ED to BU then it is a binding decision so it is a moot point.
Not ED at BU still waiting on acceptance but if he is accepted NPC puts BU with a lower COA. He prefers NEU though.
Northeastern will not even consider matching an NPC estimate.
Of course I know that…I am talking about when and if we get an offer from BU.
You need to wait for acceptances…and your financial aid offers.
Keep in mind…Northeastern pledges to meet full need while BU does not.
Apples and oranges.
The likelihood that BU would have give more need based aid than NEU…is low.
And I seriously doubt NEU will give two hoots about a financial aid offer from BU.
AND when you add in the NEU co-op programs…giving both job experience plus income…your net costs at NEU could end up being less than BU…plus your kiddo will have really good job experiences on their resume.
Thank you his heart is set on NEU but if only it were just 5k less. What about housing once he’s an upper classman? Is housing guaranteed? Does the co-op income go straight to NEU or does he apply it to his tuition?
I know NEU students who did live on campus all five years (includes co-op). I also know students who lived off campus. They did co-op jobs in Boston…so the 12 month lease was not a problem.
I believe the co-op earnings are like any other job…the student works and earns an income which is paid to the student. Then it is up to the student to pay their bills.
Is the Direct Loan included in the NEU financial aid award? If not, he could take that and it would make up that $5000 easily.
He should also have a job…now…and for the summer to help contribute to college costs.
But back to your question…I just can’t even think that NEU will care about a need based financial aid award from another college. And BU does NOT meet full need…so I can’t imagine the BU net cost will be less than NEU. My opinion.
Adding…the cost of attendance at NEU is about $5000 a year LESS than the cost of attendance at Boston University.
Yes the loans and work study are included in the package. Just 5k more would make all the difference I just don’t know how to ask. He does work and will work all summer for sure. When I did the NPC’s it came out to less but who knows like you said maybe it won’t be what the NPC predicts although it has been very accurate for all others.
I thought I heard them mention at the tour that Junior and Senior year housing is a lottery for on campus. Off campus could be expensive in a big city like Boston.
Northeastern guarantees housing for all years. However some housing is more desirable than others. The new LightView complex will open next year and increase choices.
Believe it or not with the BU need based grant it comes in 12k cheaper than NEU. I just did the NPC again.
Well…you can’t ask NEU to review you need based award based on the net price calculator figures from BU.
So…wait and see.
Like I said…BU costs $5000 more. NEU knows that. Even IF the BU awards is higher, NEU would be under no obligation to match it because the BU cost of attendance is…higher.
Please take the time to read the responses on this thread.
You own a business. You own a building in which your business is housed.
The net price calculators are very very often NOT accurate for business owners…and folks who own real estate other than their homes. You have both things.
At this point…all you can do is wait.
I hope you took the advice of everyone and your kid has some affordable acceptances in the hopper.
You just have to wait til you hear from BU. Rerunning the NPC isn’t really useful right now.
Yes I know all about the business aspect of NPC but in the end all the offers that have come in this far matched the NPC.
Leaving another college out of the equation how does one ask for more money?
Many colleges have a financial aid appeal form. Unless something in your finances has changed since you applied an appeal MAY get you a thousand or two more. Colleges that are struggling to fill their freshman class would be more amenable to an increase to entice the student to attend.
Thank you
