Negative things about SLO

For those who attended or have visited, what are some negative things you found?

There is no In-N-Out in SLO. -__-

Downtown seems a bit small to me and the campus at first glance isn’t as “friendly-looking” as say UCSB

Seems like there are a lot of vacant businesses in SLO.

Well I honestly like the town, but I’m beginning to feel like I don’t really belong here. I grew up out of state, near a big city. I like the small town feel of slo, but I really miss being near a city. Because slo is a small town and rather isolated, there seem to be a lot of conservative and more religious people around here, and at Cal Poly too. Some people may like that, and I have nothing wrong with people believing whatever they want, but I grew up in a more liberal area and I’m not religious, so there are many times where I feel like I don’t really fit in. I mean, it really is a nice area. Good weather, low crime, friendly people, but I’d consider it more of a vacation spot for myself and I’m seriously beginning to think about transferring schools.

its in the middle of nowhere

i go to school here, and i’m really unhappy with the lack of diversity. as previously stated, there are tons of conservative, right-wing christians, and just a lot of white people in general. i’m white myself, but i sometimes feel uncomfortable with the lack of diversity. a larger problem still, is the lack of diversity in ideas. as this is a polytechnic school, and not a liberal arts university, i find that most people are “mathy” and logical, certainly not a bad thing, but there’s a definite lack of creativity here. not a lot of people are readers, so if you’re a bibliophile like myself, you’re kinda screwed.

Really? I didn’t expect it to be as conservative as you guys make it sound. I mean, I don’t talk politics very much, but I’m not a fan of people that are really conservative and wear it on their sleeve…

so many white people! haha not racist or anything, even though i’m asian. when i was younger, all my friends were white until i moved to san francisco. haha. i just like diversity.

Wow. Now I’m glad i didn’t get in :D

It’s not a horrible school, but it’s not exactly what I expected either. I think would like a little more diversity, both racially and politically, and closer access to a big city like San Francisco or LA. And more emphasis on liberal arts would definitely be nice since that is the college I’m in. But I wouldn’t feel too bad about not getting in or being able to go here. This is a nice place, but I think it could get boring after a couple years, which is a small part of the reason I’m contemplating a transfer.

Another increasing negative is being part of the Cal State system with all the fiscal turmoil that brings.

I’ve looked over the Open House weekend, and noted a couple of featured events that surprised me: Rodeo and the Tractor Pull. Is there a big “cowboy” culture on campus? Is it the dominant culture? I mean, we like AG, but is there some organic AG going on? Is there also a healthy counter-culture of people who maybe don’t eat cows? I put this under the negative forum, because if I’ve completely misread the vibe at Cal Poly, I need to know now!

Cal Poly SLO is in a nice area but, there’s not much to do. My daughter is going to SDSU. If you want to go to a baseball game, football game, concerts, museums, amusement parks, festivals etc. Lots of places to shop and dine, it’s all there. San Diego offers alot to do. On campus they have an arena and all major music bands perform there. You’re close to Orange County. If you’re looking for a more laid back atmophere SLO probably is the right choice for you.

riverrunner; its no where near as red neck as those events imply. The success and growth of the architecture, engineering and business schools have augmented/countered the old AG school stereotypes plus AG itself has become pretty sophisticated. No, the only kind of negative comments I’ve heard from my son are that the weekends can be “boring” and there are a lot of “really Christian Christians” around which I guess is a kind of diversity.

Cal Poly is in a very small town, it is fairly conservative, but that does not make it bad. There are students from all walks of life there and college is really what you make it. It is not a full-on AG school, but does have an excellent AG department with people dedicated to the environment. One negative could be the ranching odor that comes up when the wind is blowing right. The school is really the most well known for architecture and engineering. The biggest negative is that it is nearly impossible to get in to. Other than that, the only other negative I see is not being able to switch majors. You cannot find better teachers and more caring administrators anywhere and that is one of the biggest positives.

You are smart to ask about all the schools and the negatives/positives of each one.

Having said all of that though, it is my #1 choice, always has been, always will be and if I get accepted…I think it will change my life. I am praying for that every single day.

I decided to go to Cal Poly Pomona. I like being closer to LA and the opportunity to intern at an LA studio over the summer. Plus, a Pritzker Prizer winner (Thom Mayne) taught at Cal Poly Pomona. The Pritzker Prize is like the Nobel Prize of Architecture btw. Thanks for your feedback…
@tornados, I wish I could give you my spot…

PolyArch, I wish you could too, I don’t think I have ever wanted anything more. But, I will hold my breath like everyone else. By the way, my mom went to Pomona and had some of the best instructors ever. She really enjoyed every part of it. Good school, and great location for internships.

tornados^ What major did you apply for? I am so surprised that people are still waiting to hear. You sound very passionate about CP and I hope you are accepted and find out soon. I will add you to my prayers…

Thanks momofmv.

I applied Art & Design. We just had our portfolio deadline two weeks and their website says they will be reviewing them through today. From that point, it says it will be three weeks before we hear. Long wait, but that means they are putting a great deal of effort into their decision and you have to respect that. Prayers are what get me through this. I want to be at Cal Poly more than life.
