NEOMED 2019 EA Results

Didn't see anything like this in years past. I know I wanted to evaluate myself with a previous results thread like this when applying. Please post your results/stats below :)

Accepted- UAkron (1st choice)/NEOMED
SAT- 2320 (800 CR/W, 720 M)
SAT II- 800 Chem, 800 Math II
GPA- 4.31/4.33
Rank- 2/350
ECs- 3 research projects (2 yrs); hospital volunteer (5yrs); dance (12 yrs); varsity tennis (4 yrs); various leadership positions in school clubs
Interview(s)- UA was my first and worst; NEOMED's was pretty chill; YSU was my best because all the nerves were gone; Kent's was pretty good but I was SO tired by the end of the weekend.

Wow! Impressive stats. Congrats. My daughter was also acccepted to NEOMED /Akron 2nd choice. IMHO it was the best option. She can post her own stats if she so desires. Akron was also her first and she says by far her worst interview.

Awesome test scores. Congrats! Are you in state and why’d you pick Akron?

Thanks and yes I’m IS. I picked Akron because I thought they had the best balance of curriculum, student life, and facilities for me. Plus, Akron has a 3rd yr MBA option that the other 2 schools don’t offer.

Good idea! Hopefully this will help future applicants.
Accepted- Kent (1st choice–loved the humanities focus, though a bit worried about MCAT prep if I choose to attend)/NEOMED
ACT - 34
SAT II- Took Math II, Chem, Spanish, and Lit–all around 750
GPA- 3.95/4.5
Rank- 2/2–
ECs- Hospital volunteering, a bit of epidemiology, Physician shadowing, formed a few clubs and participated in many other existing ones and held several leadership positions including Class President, piano, etc. I can elaborate if anyone is interested.
Interview(s)- I had Akron first, and the interviewers didn’t seem interested in the slightest, which kind of unnerved me. NEOMED’s MMI’s were fun, the interviewers at YSU and Kent were genuinely interested in listening to me.

^were you IS or OOS?

I’m an Ohio resident, so IS–which makes NEOMED much easier.

you’re so lucky!!! I wish I lived in OH.

It’s the only benefit of living in Ohio, I swear. But Penn, TX, NJ, and NY residents are pretty lucky themselves!

Living in GA has absolutely no benefits. We have 0 combined degree programs & bipolar weather.

“Accepted- Kent (1st choice–loved the humanities focus, though a bit worried about MCAT prep if I choose to attend)”
-The requirement was 24 in a past. Has it changed? If it is 24, there is nothing to worry about. There are student who have 25+ of the first diagnostic practice MCAT, which they take BEFORE they start preparing and even before some very significant pre-reqs like physics. Do not get me wrong, it is a tough exam, but if requirment is 24, it is not that hard to get.

Thanks, MiamiDAP. I think my worry for the MCAT arises more from medical school exams. Assuming that the MCAT isn’t taking totally seriously in a program with a 24 requirement, I don’t want the last test that I took seriously to be the ACT. I haven’t found much information on how NEOMED students perform on the USMLE Steps and in residency placement.

@keen when are you supposed to take the MCAT for a 6 yr program? MCAT is changing in 2015 so I’d take it before the change

OK, do not worry about " USMLE Steps " either. There is absolutely NOTHING you can do in UG that would prepare you for this. This is sooooo beyond MCAT and anything that you have encounter so far, you really cannot imagine the difficulty level at this point. Just relax, take one day at a time, one step at a time, do not try to run before you know how to crawl. The whole academic experience in Med. School (any Med. School in the USA) is way beyond anything that even UG senior can anticipate, let alone HS kids. Do not think about it now, you will learn how to deal with it when time comes.

If you were wondering about residency matches, their website has previous years’ lists.

I was also accepted to neomed at uakron. @phloppy95, sounds like you and I had a similar experience. Akron was the last one I expected because it was my first interview and it didnt feel very strong compared to my other two!

SAME HERE on everything. I got into Akron first choice, and I was 99.9% sure I hadn’t gotten in there because my interview went so badly…my ACT was 34, SAT 2200, top 3-4% of my class, held an officer position in National Honor Society, etc. etc. Also I have a question if you guys care to answer. My last grades that Akron is going to see aren’t that great–I am looking at at least 2 B’s, if not 4, out of my 5 grades. Are these grades bad enough that NEOMED could revoke my acceptance? All the B’s would be in AP classes (AP Calculus AB, AP Physics C, probably in AP Biology, and maybe in AP English)…I am sosososo nervous about getting my acceptance revoked…do you think there’s a chance?

My D has been scheduled an interview. It seems like several already got admitted.

Any NEOMED interview tips please?

I applied EA and got an interview at all three schools, ended up getting into my 1st choice which was Kent. Loved the campus and curriculum setup there.

With the interviews, the most important thing for me was preparation. NEOMED is mainly focused on family medicine, so I made sure that all of my future plans centered around being a family physician working in a small town somewhere.

And when they ask why you want to be a doctor, make sure you don’t give a cliche answer like “I want to help people.” They absolutely detest that.

Some of the more difficult questions were the medical ethics questions. The key here is to stick firmly to your beliefs and do not sell out your beliefs in any way. I don’t think that they are looking for any particular set of beliefs (i.e. pro-life vs. pro-choice), they only want someone who will be steadfast in their own. Do not waver on any condition whatsoever.

Good luck!

Did anyone attend the Regular action interview this week?
