Nerd Rage . . . 33.25

Just had a few questions for my fellow ACT fighters.

So, the first try I received a 32 +9, with math as the lowest. I studied a little bit, and improved to a 33 on my state required test. When the April test came, I was sure that this was the one: I would be getting a 34 or higher. All of the sections seemed very easy except the science. I dislike the science section and knew that I had probably not performed at a 35 or 36 level, but I estimated that I would end up with a 33 or 32.

Yesterday, the results come out, with a E:35 M:34 R:34 S:30, and the hated 33.25 composite.

I do have "Ivy Dreams" (yes, I know that you can get a good education other places too), and was just wondering: What do I do?

Do I stop here? Or do I try one more time for 34 or higher? I have 7 practice tests (5 real), so I am sure I could improve on the science section. My extra-curriculars are good, but not standout or great.

And lastly, when do I take it if I retake it? I could try June, but I will be going to my state's Governor's school, and am not sure if I will be able to take it there. The alternative date is in September.

I hope my post wasn't too long! Thanks in advance, if anyone wants me to look at one of their threads in return, I will.

You should be good with a 33. It depends on more than just the ACT for Ivies. Considering your high ACT score, I’m guessing that you’re taking rigorous courses in high school, and Ivies look at your EC’s heavily because there are so many students with identical ACTs, GPAs, etc.

I suppose you are probably right.

It’s just that I have always seen other posts on CC where a 34+ is considered “unquestionable.” People often say that “you will never be rejected because of your scores if you have a 34,” which implies that you can be possibly be rejected with a 33, or that a 33 is slightly questionable.

What makes it even harder is being so close. I have know idea how I possibly could have gotten a 30 on the science; my gut feeling has always been correct (except for now), and I expected a 32 or 33. With real prep I am sure I could get a 34 or 35 every time.

Yes, I do take the most rigorous classes and will probably be val/sal, but I am worried that my ec’s are not too strong. I work throughout the year, probable NMF, captain of varsity swim team, varsity level in local year round swim club, state governor school this year, and then some normal clubs and volunteering. They are not weak, but are certainly not special.

I just thought that it might be good to plug any possible weak spots in my app, and scores are much easier to shape than ec’s.
