I'm interested in pursuing a cognitive science (neuroscience track) major at Rice along with going pre-med. I know that as a pre med I have to take bio, general chem, and math next year, but I don't know how my cog sci courses will fit in with that. what is the course schedule of a typical Rice person with this major?

As a cogsci major, you first have to take PSYCH 101 before you're eligible for the intro to cogsci class.

As a pre-med, another good course to take as a freshman is general physics (101/102 or 125/126). You can also take that as a sophomore if you want it to be fresher in your mind when you take the MCAT.

Otherwise, freshman year for most people is a year of pre-reqs and electives. Between biology, gen chem, math, and psych, you should have your hands full. So for your remaining class(es), you might try fulfilling your distribution requirements, if your AP/IB credit doesn't cover it, and/or taking the year of English also required for the pre-med track.

thanks emilia!

you don't need to take psyc 101 (i didn't). even for biopsych i saw a girl who asked the prof whether it was a problem that she hadn't taken any psych courses, though she was enrolled in psyc 101 concurrently, and he said it was fine.

Since there is no premed major at rice, you shouldn't have a problem fitting in a cogsci major, but your first (and probably second) years will have a lot of premed requirements you'll want to take.
