Never done sports before but...

Since I come from a country where I've been slightly underprivileged in terms of opportunity, i've always wondered this as soon as I started planning for college:

Is it possible to start learning and playing a new sport at college?
In fact, I had the same question about not just sports, but other activities as well.

Any reply would be helpful, thanks :)

It’s definitely possible. Don’t expect to walk onto a varsity team, but there should be plenty of club sports and the like where you can start with little or no experience. I joined the boxing team at my school and had a lot of fun with it, though it was hard work. You can probably search “[name of college] club sports” on Google and find a list on the school’s website.

This definitely goes for other activities, too. I feel like sports are what you would need the most experience for, and there are still plenty of opportunities for someone without any experience. For other activities, you can just join a club and start from there.

Good luck.

Definitely! I played soccer in high school and was looking for a change after a couple years in college. I took a 1 credit class in fencing and absolutely loved it. I know friends who took classes in tennis, martial arts, basketball, and various dance mediums. In addition, the gym at my school offered various other fitness classes, if that’s also something you’re interested in.

Many schools also have some sort of gym requirement for graduation, too. I took Volleyball as one of mine and had a lot of fun. There are also club/intramural sports. Many gyms also have non-credit classes just for fun, like zumba or martial arts that are not linked to grades or graduation requirements.

The club sports are just for fun, so it’d be no problem if you’ve never played the sport before. Try out a bunch of different things and see what you like.

Hi Proddicles,

Defiantly you should try sports and activity. It develop your personality. Sports and activity are built to develop a person thinking. You will learn lot’s of thing like team building , leadership, team effort and many more. It’s not a big deal that you are doing it first time, just start and enjoy.

My D played 2 sports in HS, but as an Engineering major, decided not to pursue them in college. She did play all her dorm’s IM sports (Intermural) for fun, and started to play a brand new club sport, which she loved.

So have fun, and try a couple of different things, ansd maybe you will find something you really enjoy.

Spend some money on proper cross trainer shoes, wicking shorts and shirts.
Consider taking group classes like conditioning classes, yoga, spin, step if you are not fit and haven’t played outdoors sports.
Even if you join intramurals, you have to have some skill level.
Take the opportunity to learn to swim, play tennis, bowling, golf, badminton any beginning PE classes.

Thank you so much for all of your advice! I really appreciate it.
