i never heard of pepperdine until i saw it on the US news rankings. Could someone tell me what kind of school it is (what are their strong majors), social life, etc.

Go to the website and look around. Do you love CA?

eh i dont really care about location...i just cant be a really small college

Small is a relative term....If your HS has 4000 then you might find it small if your high school had 400 your opinion may be different.

well like i dont want 'small town/rural' college.

pepperdine is a relatively small, church affilitated school and there is some "religious" aspect to it, in terms of courses you must take-not many, but that is there. the school's location is relatively new. Until the 60's it was near USC in downtown LA. It's now on a hillside overlooking Malibu and the ocean. Not a big fan of the campus in that it looks like a giant condo project. The dorms are supposed to be quite amazing, w/ ocean views etc. though.

I think they're best known for bus ad. related majors. Pretty much a "safety" type school, although it is getting harder to get into.

sort of a country clubbish feel, not alot of diversity. As far as campus life, not much to do in Malibu except the beach and you're a good 40 minute or so drive into Los Angeles. Also, there ain't no football team, so the big campus events are more basketball and volleyball.

o so theres not much of a 'social life' going on, just academics and relegion :(. darn its a shame with such an awesome campus

There are a lot of top schools I'd never heard of before reading rankings. Living in New England, all we hear about are local schools, so a lot of West Coast schools like Reed, the Claremonts, Willamette, and others were totally new to me.

Yea, Pepperdine is a "safety school"...

After all, they reject 75% of all applicants.

they may reject 75%, but who is applying. their average SAT for the incoming class last year was about 1250. By way of local comparision, Oxy was about 1350 avg SAT, Claremont about 1400 and Pomona about 1450.

No offense to anyone, but Pepperdine is not exactly considered an academic "heavy hitter".

Thats not the topic Bullwinkle...Obviously, Pepperdine is not a Stanford...what I was speaking on was the referral to Pepperdine as a "Safety School". Any school that rejects 75% of applicants should never be considered a saftey unless you have PERFECT credentials. With a school like Pepperdine, that looks at applicants extracurriculars more so than other universities, the admissions process for any given person is almost unexpected.

Look at the U.S. Military Academy. Though it is a strong academic school, I don't think anyone would call it a "heavy hitter". Yet this school is a reach for almost everyone.

AF337- what is the topic? the poster said they'd never heard of the school and asked about Pepperdine and I gave my opinion. If I misapplied the term "saftey school" by your standards, sorry. How'd you like me to say it? I don't think Pepperdine is a very tough school to get into if you have decent "credentials". Is that better? Besides, IMO the reject stat is probably one of the most worthless stats to look at in judging a school. It doesn't mean much of anything. There are many schools that send out blanket letters encouraging applicants who will NEVER get in just so they can beef up this stat. Who cares who they reject, the point is who they accept and what it takes to get in.

Also the comparison to West Point is IMO not applicable. The service academies are a world unto themselves.

Pepperdine is an ultra conservative, racist, homophobic, lily white, discriminatory, preppy, beautiful school with a strong business program in boring Malibu that closes at 10 PM.

uhm.. wow namaste. that's harsh.

Pepperdine is a nice school =] Would be nice to go there, but doubt my parents would pay for it.

my daughter just started her first year at peppedine. We are from Tennessee, but were familiar with the school because of it's Church of Christ affiliation. As a parent, I am pleased with the quality of education I think she will get. However, I am displeased with the condition of the particular dorm she lives in. I am not sure if it is because it is a freshman dorm, but it looks pitiful. Also, some studios film on the campus and it can be annoying. Britney Spears' little sister has her Nickelodeon show filmed there and my daughter stays in the dorm where it was filmed so there were a few delays in getting totally moved in. The students are confident and intelligent. I am sending her car to her next week because there is no way to get around and we do not know anyone. There were people who volunteered to assist until her car arrived, but when she actually asked, they acted as if she annoyed them. So as a mom I am someone frustrated. She is a very serious student. She understands why she is there and she intends to finish her accounting degree in less than 4 years. The campus is beautiful and the ability to see the Pacific from almost any point on campus is very humbling. Be ready to hike. There are steep stairs and hills. The school is literally cut into the Santa Monica Mountains.

It does not matter what you think Pepperdine is, it only matters what you think you are. The purpose of college is to to assit you in your endeavor to get anything you need using only what you know. Too many kids lose focus. The only thing I expect from Pepperdine is the education my child will receive and reasonable protection. I have instilled in her the ability to receive instruction, break it down and build it back up in a way that she can understand it. I expect Pepperdine to give the instruction. I expect my daughter to analyze it, tear it down and build it back up in a way she understands it. That's all. She is not there to make friends, see celebrities, or be liked. She is there to get an education. NO more No less.

Students of Color in the undergraduate population:

Pepperdine: 32%
Georgetown: 21%
U of Michegan Ann Arbor: 14%

Namaste, your comment seems strange in light of these stats.

Mickey: Boy that's a different view of college! I understand a little of what you are trying to say, but I got lots more out of college than instruction. I was able to define my personality without being defined by my childhood environment. I found out who I really was. I found out what subjects I liked and didn't like. I found out what activities I preferred because there were so many to choose from. I also made friendships that I still have 30 years later and I met my husband through those friends. I also learned that people from other states had different traditions and culture than I had growing up and this broadened my perspective on the world.

namaste "Pepperdine is an ultra conservative, racist, homophobic, lily white, discriminatory, preppy, beautiful school with a strong business program in boring Malibu that closes at 10 PM."

Yes Pepperdine is fairly conservative, but my liberal D is a soph, whose best friends and suite mates include, brasilian, asian, afro-american, gay, Spanish international student , egyptian...so much for the lily white.
She absolutely loves the school, finds it challenging, yet the professors are extremely available. Many of them live on campus and have dinners for the students. Her Italian teacher is bound and determined to make sure she does well even though languages have been a challenge and she is succeeding.
It is a magnificent campus, yes the dorms have great views...yes they are slow on repairs, but they have suites with cleaining service in the common areas. The campus is pretty, there is a lot of walking, hills and stairs...there i are shuttles but most students walk. Beautiful view!! Clean ocean air..can get windy...beach across from the campus, Malibu State Park on the other side..canyon and hills trails and streams. Not bad for 4 years, nestled in a neighborhood where real estate goes for millions! Another view Pamela Anderson jogging on the track! Excellent theater that has student and professional productions and performances year round. An on campus museum with rotating exhibits.

My daughter enjoys the social life and does not find it difficult to find things to do. This week alone she had a movie night with friends, went to a dance performance and a play, partied on the weekend. Not much night life in Malibu, but bonfires at the beach year round, 80 degrees last weekend, definitely beach weather! Sororities and fraternities host social events. Wextchester (UCLA) and Santa Monica 15 - 20 minutes away...a car is advisable...Hollywood 25 minutes away. My D has a car, but prefers to catch a ride...her car is an old Mustang, good for local trips. it is a "dry" campus, but the students are not "dry". Unfortunately, from a parent perspective.

Great international program, D is going to Forence, Italy this summer through Pepperdine's IP. Many student study overseas for a a semester or a whole year Sophomore year

Majors...definitely strong in Business, Marketing, Communications and Psychology.
However D is a theater major...must audition...great program small and personal...good connections to the industry in ther L.A. area.
Also has a good music dept. including an opera program.
Excellent Liberal Arts College

For some on CC, Pepperdine is not acknowledged, but as an educator I feel it is a great school, very student oriented with a true desire to provide a challenging environment that breeds success.

As a parent this school has made me as a parent feel that our family made the right choice and the money is well spent (however thank God for the grants she was awarded!) It is a small but welcoming community! My D prefers a small community feel on campus, but enjoys the expanse L.A. has to offer.

Pepperdine is a very special school that is not,and does not pretend to be, for everyone. It is conservative and Republican connected. It is one of the three or four most beautiful campuses in the U.S. Yet,I also agree with nemaste. Pepperdine is a school that must be visited before enrolling. Clears out on the weekends-is that good or bad for you? Very religious and very conservative-is that good or bad for you? Some, well many, of the students are snobby at times, and judgmental. If you are comfortable with that then it is good. Pepperdine is different, but different can be good or bad. Pepperdine certainly is beautiful in the physical setting sense. An applicant can have unusually high SAT scores and be rejected. One of the best ways to understand Pepperdine is to read their application questions;then you will know whether or not it is the school for you.
