New Andover Students

What?! You got in! I'm going to be a new lower this year as well, and anyone can feel free to share their experience, either as an incoming Andover student, or as a current student. I'd like to know who's going through the same nervous/excited feeling as I am and current Andover students (or alumni) please, share with us the perks(and downfalls) of being a student at Andover.
Looking forward to September 2014!

I realize this is probably meant for an existing Andover student, but does anyone know whether 9th graders usually take 5 or 6 classes? The coursebook implies 6 for the 9th grade year and 5 for later years. This seems a little backward to me as a way to get feet wet and I would just like to know what most students do and if it is manageable. My dd is hoping to pursue an extracurricular at a high/varsity type level in the fall and don’t want her to be overwhelmed.

Here are some recent threads. You might be able to find some fellow students there. Congratulations and good luck next fall!

@gratefulmom99 I’m coming in as a new lower so I’m not as sure, but from what I heard a ninth grader can take five courses and easily get done with their credits by senior year. Since courses are much harder and your daughter wants to be involved in extra curriculars and varsity sports, it is much wiser to take five courses, atleast fall term. If she feels as though she can handle it, she can take six afterward, but I think she has to consult her advisor for that. Again, I am a new tenth grader, so I don’t know as much but this is what I gathered from information on other threads or from the Andover website. Any current student feel free to correct me if I am wrong.
@PhotographerMom‌ Thank you, these links seem very helpful  I will read them ASAP

@gratefulmom89 9th graders will generally have a schedule consisting of English 100, History 100, Bio 100, and the level of math and foreign language in which they are placed. So that’s five classes. Also it is strongly suggested that they complete 1 credit of art, music, and phys ed before the end of their lower year. Because a new 9th grader must complete 1 credit of philosophy & religious studies in 10th grade, a 9th grader, in discussion with an advisor, will usually knock out 1 credit each in art and music in 9th grade. I’d suggest DD wait until winter term to pursue.

It is not counterintuitive that 9th & 10th graders may have more classes than 11th and 12th; classes in the core subjects get progressively more difficult.

@skieurope that makes sense and is very helpful. Thanks also for the links from @photographermom and for input from @kikadia99 as well.

You know, guys, there’s a thread where you can start putting down your soon-to-be blood enemies.
