new-bee! hotel grad school

Here is a little about me, I graduated from high school in 2001. I had high scores and grades but since I was an orphan I could not leave the state of Maryland. I did not know this tell a few weeks before I was to leave for Florida State. I wanted to be a marine biologist. I did 2 years at a community college before transferring to a HBCU (by the way I’m an black American Female), any way since I did not have parents to help pay for books and living expenses I had to work. I started working at a hotel my senior year in high school as an breakfast attendant, then as a house keeper. After I transferred to the University of Maryland eastern shore I realized I really liked hotel work, so I changed my major to Hotel and Restaurant management. Because of the transfer, change in Majors and some pitfalls like me being homeless for a while, I will not be graduating on time, so I will be graduating in 2006-2007 school year. Any way I do have a few bad grades and some failed classes but my overall GPA is a 3.2 (now that I got my self together!) I have a lot of hotel experience, and by time I graduate I hope my GPA is higher. I also plan to take the GMAT. OK here are my questions:
1. Will the school judge me on my spotty transcript or my Final GPA?
2. Will I be judge on how long I went to undergraduate school?
3. What is the best GMAT score to get to help me get in? I’m really smart so I’m sure I will get an awesome score on my GMAT, but will it help?
4. Will my degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management help?
5. What are my changes? What do I need to do to get in? I’ll do anything!

Pineappletree,

Probably more than any other part of Cornell, the Hotel School values hands on work experience and a passion for the industry. It sounds like you have an outgoing personality and good communication skills which are also highly valued.

I think you fit this criteria:

thanks, I was just mainly worried about my transcript vs my GPA

Pineappletree,

The Hotel School and in particular the grad program is small enough that I think you can get some quality pre-application attention. I would contact the hotel school directly and present your story just as you did here and see what they say. My hunch is that they will welcome you with open arms.
