Well, every other college as a thread like this, and it looks like the NCF board is about to die, so I thought I would make one of these for the class of 2008. Maybe it can help the 09ers guessing their chances too.

Decision: ACCEPTED

UW GPA: 3.87
W GPA: 3.7-4.0 (Not sure, but somewhere in that range)
Residency Status: Florida Resident
Interviewed: Yes
SAT: 1370 M+V 1990 Overall
M: 690
R: 680
W: 620
ACT: 32
M: 33
R: 34
E: 33
S: 28

AP Classes: Only one, AP Environment, Senior year. My school actually offers a lot. There is no IB program.

Scholarship: Yes, Bronze Scholarship. $1,000 per year. I applied early when scholarships were guaranteed.

Other college admission decisions:

U-Miami: ACCEPTED- With Dean's Scholarship

UCF: ACCEPTED- Also admitted to Burnett Honors College with Pegasus Bronze Scholarship

UF: REJECTED (Appeal Pending)

University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign: ACCEPTED with invitation to James Scholar program

Northwestern: REJECTED (Yeah, it was a real long shot)

Additional Notes: My essay was about my learning disability and overcoming it. Because of the nature of NCF, admissions are more private/Ivy like. The overall person and ECs play a greater role than they do at other public institutions. That means your essay can make a difference at NCF! I feel that's what got me admitted because of my lack of AP classes.

Out-of-state male
3.2 GPA
30 ACT (35 E, 32 R, 28 S, 26 M)

AP English-5
AP US History-3 (I know.)
Taking AP Bio, AP English Lit and AP Govt/Econ this year.

Bronze scholarship.

Pretty sure I'm attending. If I am somehow able to afford to matriculate to Sarah Lawrence, I'll consider going there instead. I'm, like, excited and stuff.

UW GPA: 3.7 (upward trend)
W GPA: School doesn't weight.
Residency Status: Non-resident male.
Interviewed: No.

ACT: 34
M: 35
R: 33
E: 35
S: 31

AP Classes: None offered. Moderately difficult classes, but not all of the most difficult offered (specifically avoided English).

Scholarship: National Merit - $17500

Other college admission decisions:

Accepted at Macalester, U of M, Lewis & Clark, Willamette. Rejected at Pitzer.

Essay was about existential angst and public nudity.

Almost certainly going to New College, as my other first choices offered pretty much nothing in financial aid. 2 divorced parents in bankruptcy (can't take out loans), a retired step-dad with cancer-related medical bills, $14000 assessment on a house we're moving out of, my mom's losing her job, and we're expected to pay $31,000 a year out of pocket. Not exactly upper class income either (high school teacher and prison investigator). What??? Thank god for the PSAT.

I may be wrong, but I thought i saw you had applied to another college our son was applying to so since you seem to be applying to the same type of schools I wanted to ask if you visited NC? Didn't you mention SLC and Bard? The reality of the cost is hitting us hard! This college has always interested us because of their philosophy, but having seen that 77% apps were in state, i was afraid it wasn't diverse enough. I would love to hear if you visited! Thanks!

Yes, I visited. I haven't visited SLC yet, so I can't compare, but it was really terrific. Everyone I met was really down-to-earth, genuine and intelligent. The class I attended was insightful, though perhaps a bit drier than I would've liked at such a "quirky" school. The campus is really pretty as well. If NCF were in, say, Massachusetts or New York, it would be perfect because I'm not entirely smitten with Florida. But if you're son would've enjoyed SLC or Bard, I'm sure he'll love NCF. The money issue is also hitting my family hard....it's a sad and unfortunate reality to have to face.

applicantsmom, don't worry so much about the large number of applications from instate. Many of the FL kids apply because it's a great school academically and they get to use their Bright Futures scholarships there. Ultimately, many of those FL kids opt either for other FL schools or go out of state when they realize they want a more traditional school. If your son is applying to SLC and Bard, then it's likely that New College would be a good fit. There are many kids there from other states and countries.

It's hard to beat the great bargain that New College is...great profs and a personalized curriculum. Sarasota is even growing on us and we find more interesting things about it everytime we visit. My older daughter is a first year and it's a great place for her. Now, my younger daughter is trying to decide between joining her sister there next year or going to one of the other schools she was accepted at. It's a very difficult decision for her.

To all those planning or thinking about going next year, I'm happy to try to answer questions or ask my daugher if I don't know the answer.

hi 2forcollege---always have enjoyed your posts on other threads

my d is applying to nc, seems like a good fit, though haven't visited yet. s/w admission counselor who suggested coming in fall to their orientation...so planning on this...(getting my '08 son up to Wash and Lee next week) so will soon have more focus on my '09 d...do you know if it is helpful to apply early decision? (are you guys in fla?)

Yes, we're from S. FL. My girls are also one year apart, so I can relate about having to turn around and do it all over again!

There are several very good reasons to apply to NCF early. For one, scholarships (in addition to their Bright Futures $) are given by the foundation on a first come first serve basis to qualified students. Another reason to apply early is to get the acceptance in hand for some peace of mind...it really takes the stress off senior year knowing you are accepted to a great school that you can afford. NCF is also becoming more well-known (especially out of state), so it's good to be ahead of the competition.

My D is very happy there and can't wait to get back. Please don't hesitate to ask any questions.

hi 2forcollege---thanks for your post--now i get your screen name...where does your 2nd d want to go?

my d will apply early, good info...she has 3.8 gpa, and 1210 on sat--she's not sure about retaking...may be low for nc? good writer and would love the small classes, and advisor relationships w profs. any tips would be welcomed, ie. topic of essay, etc

thanks...sent my senior d and 7th gr son off to first day of school this morn...noticed while I'm not having too much trouble letting go of my s leaving for w and l, I did serve my 12 yr old oj in a cute kids cup, and bought him watermelon smoothie kids shampoo yesterday, we both got a good laugh about it...

My oldest left yesterday for NCF (orientation leader) and I'm glued to the hurricane forecasts. Last year at Parent Orientation my H & I were chuckling over all the OOS parents obsessed with how well the school was prepared for hurricanes...now I'm glad I know what their plans are and that they have a good place for the kids to go (thank you OOS parents!)

My youngest is off to U Michigan this fall, though she came very close to following her sister to NCF. It was a very difficult decision for her. And I'm totally babying her in this last week before she leaves!

Your D's grades are good. Has she taken very many APs? That would be helpful if your school offers them. I won't claim to know much about admissions, except that they are getting more competitive (we know of kids not accepted last year). So I would suggest she retake the SAT's, or try the ACT. Both my girls did much better on that test. A higher score will not only improve her chance for admission, but for Bright Futures and NCF scholarships. Also, make sure she writes a great essay. NCF cares a lot about writing skills and they are important to success in their program.

enjoy babying your baby this next few weeks...you must be very proud

my d took AP Lang==got an A and a 4 on the AP exam==dropped a second AP due to mono. She's taking 3 AP's this year. wondering about the ACT--my son got 1510 on SAT and is discouraging sister from taking ACT==thinks not as credible...but apparently it is. thanks for the suggestion

best of luck and hope its not too difficult with your youngest launching...

Thank you! Tell your D the ACT gets you into college and Bright Futures just as well as the SAT does! Some kids are just better at one than the other.

glad to hear it....not easy to be concerned about your daughter being affected by a hurricane while away...dropped my son at wash and lee this weekend...he's happy and I'm putting together care packages to keep myself from missing him...
