new/ different people in college (specifically long island)

i've been accepted into hofstra and i went to a student admitted day recently. Everything seemed cool, and I really liked what I saw in the communication area. I'm really worried about the people though- I wasn't able to get much of a sense about the people around me in the 3 hours I was there. I've heard the girls are snooty and the guys are arrogant. I'm from Vermont where everybody is just happy and laid back, and im worried I won't fit in at all with these long island people. I feel like im able to get along with anyone, but please tell me if it will be different here. I NEED SOME HONEST ADVICE so pleeeeasse help!! Thanks.

if ur not from the long island area or don't know these kinds of people specifically, have u find that where u are at or are looking at have seemingly completely different people?? was this hard to adjust to, or were u able to find people like you and get along with the new people?? any answers/ advice will really help. Thanks!!

can't figure out if i did this right because i dont see it on the list, so im replying to myself to put it back there.

just one more attempt by me to get this on the main screen in hopes of a response...

wow i am lame here i go again......

Sammy,

My son was accepted to Hofstra and we went to a day program last week. First of all, the school is about 50-50 in-state v out-of-state, so I'd suggest you not get too hung up on the Long Island personality issue. Secondly, its really tough to make a generalization about the kinds of kids that hang there. Yes, there will be some snotty and arrogant people, but that is life.. they are everywhere. Part of college is getting thrown into a diverse mix of kids and finding your way, and getting along.

As a Vermonter who is laid back and relaxed, none of this should bother you. My son is trying to decide among 4 good schools, including Hofstra, and frankly, I was really impressed with their approach to academics. The "bad rap" of the school is that it is a "commuter school", i.e., lots of kids go home for the weekend if they live close.
That seems to be changing and in fact, the folks at Hofstra seem like they are really pushing to improve their selectivity and ranking.

Thanks I really appreciate your response, and it makes alot of sense. Maybe I'll see your son at Hofstra next year!!

Did you know that apart from Israel, Hofstra currently has the highest percentage of jewish princesses in the world. Don't quote me on that, but I was told that. ha. I'm from Massachusetts and here we are just as laid back as those from Vermont. No worries mate. All will be well, plus, the surf of Long Island is pretty incredible. <3 You'll be destined to find snobs no matter where you go.

Not. Hofstra's not even varsity when it comes to the big JAP schools.

BU, Emory, SUNY Binghamton, GWU, NYU, Miami, Penn, and Syracuse head the list. JV Teams include U of Hartford, Delaware, Hofstra, and American.
