New Dorms Opening in FALL for Freshman

UD officially announced that two new dorms will open for incoming Freshman in the Fall. The two new buildings are on the East Campus east of the Perkins student center. The two new buildings will house 767 freshman including approximately 450 students in the Honors Program (Goodbye to Russell). I do not know the outlay of the rooms. UD's ultimate goal is to house all freshman on the East campus.

It looks like about 450 non-honors freshman will be able take up the spaces in the Russell Complex. Unfortunately this will just about compensate for the fact that the Harrington Complex will be closed for renovations until 2015. UD is also building another new dorm and dining hall across the street from Perkins which are also scheduled to open in 2015. I understand the plan is to close Dickinson and Rodney on the West campus. I have heard (not confirmed) that Dickinson will be the first to close probably in the Fall. As least Rodney is air-conditioned. So it looks like by the Fall of 2015 all the incoming Freshman will be housed on the East Campus, which is an excellent location.

Knocking down Rodney can’t happen soon enough. Is Dickenson even worse?

I didn’t think Russell was so bad. Why is it so important to upgrade the honors kids while the others still have the “Rodjects?”

If all dorms are as nice as those on Laird, that will be great for all future students.

With the Harrington Complex closing for renovation until 2015 there will still be a need to house some freshman on the West Campus, irregardless of where the honor students are housed on the East Campus. Dickinson is not air-conditioned. Rodney, besides having AC, is closer to academic buildings as well (so less walking). Different people will have different views on which building complex is worse. But there also are a number of students who have reported positive experiences in both buildings after being housed there. So it is a matter of opinion.

can you request where you want to reside

can you request where you would like

Thank you for the information…waiting and hoping for UD…maybe even the new dorm!!

Yes you can request where you would like to live but there is no guarantee. UD is not like some colleges where the sooner you send in your deposit the more likely you are to get your request (unless they change things this year). As noted above Honor Program students will all be housed in one of the new buildings on East Campus. You can request a room with a specific roommate if you like but you can only request one location if I remember correctly.

Even though Russell dorms are on the older side - my D loves it there
