Hey guys. I am also a new dukie and I have TONS of questions! Can current Duke students answer them please? That would be awesome! Thanks a bunch!

What is the best cell phone service on the Duke campus with the best coverage?

Do most freshman have cars?

How bad is the self-segregation by income? I really like Duke, this is just my only concern: that people who are affluent stick together, join the same frats, etc, and the social scene becomes exclusive at the expense of campus unity.

1). Verizon generally has good coverage on campus, AT&T isn't bad either. Most people tend to have one of those two.

2). I hear about a third of the freshmen bring cars so it's not unheard of. If you don't have a car, chances are you'll know someone who does so I wouldn't worry.

3). I haven't seen that much segregation by income. IMO, income just isn't something that really impacts social interactions. I mean people don't really get together and discuss what their parents' salaries are or anything like that. I for one, have no idea about the financial situation of my friends and I don't really care. Most people I interact with share my opinion.

1/ AT&T is OK but Verizon has the best coverage, unequivocally.
2/ I personally do not have a car and I don't think it's a problem. However I'm still a freshman and I might end up getting one later. Many have a car here but rare are the students who actually use their car...
3/ Besides a few people, the vast majority of students mix with each other, regardless of income. I can't really talk abt frats though because I'm still a freshman

My S attends and I beleive that it is easier to park as a freshman, but neither he nor his friends brougfht their cars. As far as incomes go, I have not heard my S mention anything about kids segregating by income but to some extent that can occur anywhere. My S never would do that nor would his friends,

u start classes august 25th, winter break is on the 14th depending on how many exams u have it could be earlier, you come back on the 6th of january and you are off for summer at the beginning of may.

you will get a blue book (your most important guide to duke for incoming freshman) and i believe class scheduling will be open around late june. 1st semester freshman have more restricted schedules (like pratt requires a chem and math class) and half of freshman will need to take writing 20 the 1st semester. again, its a good 5-6 months away so rest assured u will be properly informed =)

As far as selecting courses and profs they give you assigned dates to pick, upper classmen go first and freshman usually last, that way kids who are close to graduation can get the courses they need. If you do go last, you may not get the clases you want with the prof you want , or get you may have to take a course with difficult professor in the school.

Parent here...thanks for answering questions. Do you think it is worth it to request and pay more for an air-conditioned freshman dorm room or is it generally cool enough in the rooms? I know it can get pretty hot and sticky down in NC. There is no medical need for AC.

Well, you can't actually request an AC dorm without a medical condition...or else 95% of people would, and then, well, that's trouble. Unless you have a medical condition requiring AC/handicap access, play on a varsity team, or are in a certain FOCUS cluster, you're randomly assigned a dorm. This usually works out INCREDIBLY well...I loved my freshman dorm more than anything, and met all of my best friends there!

It can definitely get hot and humid, but I'd say it's only really bad for a month or so of freshman year...this year especially it got cold fast! And by the time it gets hot for the summer everyone is home. If you get an AC dorm great...if you don't...just load the room up with fans, hang out in the common areas...etc etc.

Note: I'm also pretty sure you can request a non-ac dorm, however, for financial reasons.

Every class (other than seniors) is divided into 3 windows, and each window has a different day to register. Juniors will have their 3 days, then 3 days for sophomores, and finally 3 days for freshmen. The windows are based on your student ID# and they change every semester, so that everyone has good and bad windows an equal number of times.

Hi all! I'm really excited about next year! I just have a couple questions. First, I'm from Florida, so here the coldest it gets it around 30 degrees lol. I was wondering what the coldest temperature is about in Durham and if it snows and how often (I would love that!). Also, I think I want a roommate, but the single room option is making me second guess myself, what is your view on that?

I live in Durham. It snowed like 3 times last year?? and about twice this year..the snow is like, 1/4inch LOL..and i wear flip flops & sweatshirt to school almost everyday this month..u'll be fine :)
