Any students starting in Fall 2013 figure out how to access email? It now says my USC email is my preferred email but I cant access it. Tech support and admissions could not figure it out and my email from school is being sent to that account.

all i know is my usc email is my preferred, like yours. When i try to reset my pin on VIP it tells me im not in the system! And when i try to log in with the VIP ID and the password i set up (they told you how to do it in the packet they send with the acceptance) it says i cant log in with that and i need my VIP ID. (even though thats exactly what i used…)

“My VIP ID is now the default login method. You may still login with your USC ID and PIN using the USC ID/PIN Login page.” << the error message i get when trying to log in with my VIP ID and the password i set up. I can sign in to self service carolina with my id and password but not VIP.

The whole system is flawed in my opinion. Can you tell me the email you used to contact them?

Just remember they are in process of switching to new system and that may be cause of glitches. In the past you could also sign into VIP with SSN…I guess that’s not an option anymore?

My daughter transferred to Carolina this semester. She had the same problems you mention last fall. She made all the calls to admissions, tech support, etc. They told her it would be resolved in a few days. I believe it was if i remember correctly. You are correct they are making changes so it may be a different issue you’re experiencing.

scmom12…fully understand they are in a process of change. The problem is that they have some students USC email as their preferred so all university info is now going there. Dont mind waiting for them to work out glitch but just switch preferred email back to home email so we can receive email about housing and other stuff.

Ive tried logging in with my USC ID (ssn) but it says it cant verify my identity! My VIP and USC ID will not work! It has to be more than just us experiencing this problem!

I think I would keep calling admissions. If enough people bug them about what new information is going out, maybe they’ll nudge tech support to get it straightened out. In the meantime ask admissions specifically about dates that orientation registration(hasn’t yet) and housing opens so you can put those on your calendar. I know you’re accepted, but have you paid deposit? You can’t sign up for orientation or housing until you do. Definitely try again tomorrow. Sometimes things get updated over the weekend.

Good luck. I find that this stuff is the downside of a large university…can’t get answers all in one place!

You have to pay deposit to sign up for housing? That is kind of strange since merit scholarships have not been given out. Are you sure about this?

Disclaimer - things may have changed over the last two years when we were in your shoes. You definitely have to commit to sign up for orientation. Looking at housing page, looks like housing sign-up is available now. Housing is assigned based on when you apply to USC, not to housing (although students always seems to know someone who is an exception) so supposedly there’s not real advantage to signing up early. It does just say “once you are admitted”. However, you do have to pay housing deposit when you sign up…look to see if it’s refundable if you go elsewhere. If you are in honors, you will be in honors dorm so no real rush unless you definitely want single room.

^^Also, USC housing and admissions (University of South Carolina, Undergraduate admissions) have facebook pages. Post problems and questions there. In the past, they have been pretty responsive to questions, answering it if it applies to lots of people or giving you a specific person to call.

I put in my deposit a few days after i found out i was accepted I will call them tomorrow hopefully this will be straightened out. If its true that housing is based on when you applied i dont think i will have a problem because i applied August 3rd.

I had emailed the admissions office about it and they referred me to the help desk. I called the help desk and they said we are not able to access VIP. (you need VIP, which is different than the VIP ID for self service carolina, to reset your password to access the email account, according to the faq page of the email site: [Student E-Mail: University of South Carolina](<a href=“Sign in to your account”>Sign in to your account) )

So then i re-emailed admissions and they didn’t know how to answer my questions, they were just as confused as i was. They also confirmed that the class of 2017 is in fact not able to access VIP. (again, weird considering you ‘need’ it to access the email) So i requested my preferred email to be my regular email. The admissions office was trying to be helpful and the woman helping me put in a request to change my email but that has not happened yet, the request was made 2 weeks ago.

hopefully the whole email situation is not just affecting us.

Is financial aid info really being sent to your usc email? How do you check?

Currently, we receive our financial aid notices via VIP. (I really do not have any kind words to say to the brilliant people who decided to get rid of VIP.) As I recall, when I was a rising freshman, all of our notices came through either VIP or our student email.

The thing is, none of us have been moved onto the current system. I work in one of the departments on campus and they haven’t started using the new system. They don’t know how they’re going to adjust to it. From what I heard, it sounds like they won’t even be making a switch until the summer. At this point in time, they do not know anything about the new system or how to use it. They are not at all happy with the change.

The problem that you are likely running into is the fact that literally NO ONE at the university currently uses the new system. They don’t know how to use it, because they’ve never had to use it before.

We had a discussion about the switch in one of my classes a couple of weeks ago and absolutely no one in there supported the change. VIP works extremely well and presents almost no problems for current students, faculty, and staff.

So with all of that being said, likely the people that you’re talking to know just about as much about the system as you. You might be in an even better position because you aren’t familiar with the old system.

It’s a terrible position to be put in, but I think you’ll probably need to pester as many people as possible until you can finally gain access.

Again, unless they’ve changed things (possible) your final financial package as incoming freshman will come in mail to you. Nothing final would be up at this point anyway since merit is not mailed until march (not sure about need based). Still, I’d be posting on every admissions, financial and tech facebook page and calling until someone got this straight. It can’t just be affecting the few students here.
