Hi,

I'm looking for schools in New England (maybe NJ or PA too) with good art programs that include both studio arts and graphic design/new media. I'm not even sure what a major like that is called so I'm going in circles a bit.

A BFA program could work - a liberal arts program is also an option. I want a program that offers a good foundation program with 2D design, 3D design, sculpture and painting. I also want exposure to computer programs = Photoshop. Illustrator, InDesign and web design.

What am I looking for?

I don't want a top tier school like MICA or RISD.

Thanks!

I would look into NHIA - New Hampshire Institute of Art (Manchester, NH), and and MECA (Maine College of Art.). D went to pre-college at NHIA and loved it - they did both traditional and graphic design . They are priced reasonably (relatively) and she got a nice merit scholarship. They were her #3 choice, losing out to MCAD and KCAI. Felt that Minn was the best “artsy” place.

Massart (Massachusetts College of Art + Design). It has exactly what you are looking for, and if you area a MA resident, it’s a bargain.

Massart does look like it’s worth looking at more. I teach at a private art school and I’m trying to help some students investigate choices. Several want to stay close to home (CT) which doesn’t leave many options. UConn is too big for them. Hartford Art School is a possibility. Cost is also a factor which makes it trickier. Massart does offer a lower rate for CT students which still puts it in the 30K range.

Any and all suggestions welcome.

My daughter is finishing up her 3rd year at MassArt. The first year was foundation so, it’s not until the 2nd year where you really begin to focus on the area of interest. My daughter is going for a BFA in fiber arts which is considered the sculpture department. She loves the faculty in her department and is happy with the facilities.

Another possibility is AIB (Art Institute of Boston), but it is a private school, so tuition is probably higher.

Hi handemom - I’m glad your daughter is happy with the school. After the foundation year can they take both studio and graphic design/new media classes? If they declare a major in illustration can they minor in graphics?

Don’t know the answer to that (school website may have info). Each program has very specific requirements, so if they aren’t somewhat related I think it’s kind of hard. I know of 1 girl with a double major in art Ed and Painting, and she plans on spending a 5th year. My D doesn’t have a minor.
