Some of you have speculated, or simply stated, that the New GRE ranges are inflated. Does anyone have convincing evidence for this? It does seem that the scores posted here are unusually high, but perhaps that's because people with unexpectedly high scores are more likely to post them on a forum like this one.

I find it difficult to believe that the GRE would do such a poor job gauging students' performance, especially after a month and half of experimentation with the new test.

Anyway, if anyone can get to the bottom of this I'd be indebted to him or her, for I want to know what programs I can get into.

By the way, I e-mailed the GRE about this very topic and recieved a generic and vague e-mail stating that the "GRE has taken measures to ensure the accuracy of the provided ranges."

Their response is reassuring!

This is an interesting question. I’m now also wondering if anyone has any info on this. Personally, I would think that the ranges are mostly accurate and any inflation would be mild. If they give you a range, it is most likely that you are somewhere within the range. It would be extremely embarassing for ETS if their ranges were innaccurate - especially since they have so much experience with standardized testing. I mean they probably tested the “Revised GRE” many many times to get a very certain way to map the scores to the odl test.

I would think this inflation is mostly a rumor. ETS most likely knows what they’re doing and everyone’s score should end up in the provided range. Especially since the ranges that people are being given are very large (50 to 100 points), it most likely has accounted for a worst-case scenario inflation problem.

Has anyone heard anything of the contrary? I s this inflation problem just a rumor?

My scores were higher than I expected which has left me very nervous. According to the range I got my score should be between 1480 and 1600. I hope it holds but am a little worried…

Guys, with all due respect, it’s ridiculous to think that there is such a high inflation that the scores we recieved will be outside of the range they provided us. ETS is not just giving us some random exam. I’m sure the revised GRE went through an exhaustive testing process before August. Remember, it’s ETS.

It is possible, for instance, that stadtkind recieved a 1480. But even that is not very likely. You will likely end up somewhere in the middle of the range for the scores you were given.

Wow I was happy with myself when I left the test center today getting a 560-660 verbal range and 670-770 quantitative score. Hopefully these are the actual ranges and hopefully I’m at least in the middle because I think a 1300+ is respectable (I’m trying to get into grad school for some form of ecology).

The only thing I did the get ready was take a single practice test which I scored a 470-570V and 700-800Q.

While I am a bit disappointed with the Q, I am very happy for the improvement on the verbal.
