New here, chances at getting into Berkeley?

Hi, Just signed up today, found this site for google searching "what are my chances at getting into berkeley" haha, I'm kinda freaking out because I got my SAT scores yesterday and i'm all "YES if I take them again i have a decent chance" but, I got some negative people getting on my case today so now i'm depressed haha. =(

My SAT scores were:
Math 520 Critical Reading 670 writing 590
1780 total
[I know the average SAT score for berkeley is 1980, but I figure that means some people got lower too]

My GPA is 3.85 something weighted(steadily going up... decided a little late to start applying myself [11th grade]) , Not sure of unweighted.

For extracurriculars I have golf team, French club, SADD, and Martial arts

I plan on taking the SAT's at least another time and trying to get my scores higher[my math score especially] and I'll be taking my subject tests sometime here.

Do you guys think I have a chance on getting into berkeley? [I'm not a resident =( I know that being a resident helps you out a lot]

Don’t let other people get you down. If you raise your SAT scores to over 2000 you will have a much better chance. Do you have any leadership experience? It is good that you were in extracurriculars but did you have an active role in them? It is going to be harder since you are not a resident. I would also suggest checking out here and seeing what some other students got to get in: [■■■■■■■■■■■■■ - University of California: Berkeley](http://■■■■■■■■■■■■■.com/college.php?college=25#cstats)

So, you’re new here, and I’m relatively new as well. The biggest thing that you have missing from that is what state you live in. When talking about a state school, the state you reside in is CRUCIAL. I will break this down:
If you live in Cal:
You need to get those scores and GPA up. I don’t know your course load, but it needs to be tough. Berkeley is arguabley the best UC school, so you need to get a bit better. join more clubs at school. No need to win a national science fair, just get involved. If you aren’t an absolutely tragic runner, maybe run track? No skill required. Also, your SAT score might benefit from joining a math club/team. Sure, you may not be a great asset to the team, but you will definitely learn from the elite math students on the team. In general,
a low GPA + Hard course load + Good SATs (2000+) = Pretty good. You’re course load is ambiguous, but the others are too low. Not hopeless by any means, but try your best to get those scores up. If you really want to go to Berkeley, you need to get the SAT to a 2000+.
If you DO NOT live in cal:
I wouldn’t bother applying. Berkeley out-of-state is near Ivy level. To get into Berkeley out of state, I would say get SATs to about 2100 (700 per section), and a weighted GPA of over 3.9. Finally, take as many AP courses as possible! My friend is not academically talented (1560 SATs), so she is taking AP art next year to show effort. Do the same. Play to your strengths. Your critical reading is good, so maybe an AP Lit? Also, class rank will be important. Top 10% is preferrable.

Sorry for being kinda mean, I’m just trying to be honest. And hey, if I’m being too harsh then you might overprepare and have even better chances ;D.

I actually did say i’m not a resident haha.
Sadly I’m not an officer or anything in any of my extracurriculars, the GPA is deffinatly going up. It was a 3.84 or something like that at the beginning of the year, but the lowest gpa in a marking period this year is 4.1, as for ap’s, I take the highest classes of what is offered in my school so there is no way to improve that [like i’m already in honors english and stuff like that our school is small and doesn’t have many “AP” classes]
I am in the top 10% of my class though if that helps. I’m deffinatly going to apply even though I’m out of state I figure I might as well give it a shot. Also, what are my chances of getting into carnegie mellon? that’s my second choice if I could choose any college I wanted.

Okay well that helps more. I now think you have a better chance. Again, in-state and with what you just said, I think you would get in. Out of state, who knows. Your GPA and rank look fine. Just work on those SATs! SATs are the one equalizer among a pool of multiple candidates. Just work on it. Practice practice practice. if you could get everything 650+, youd be good. For Carnegie Mellon, you really need to get your math SAT up.
