New high school composition competition

<p>This is a brand new competition that is open to any high school aged student in the world. No fee to enter. Cash prizes, professional recordings by the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, and a free trip for each of the finalists and three family members to San Francisco from anywhere in the world.

<p>It does have the strange twist that the ultimate judges, once the finalists have been chosen, will be high school students voting online. I have mixed feelings about that- I hate the American Idol popularity contest aspect and knowing that a composer with lots of friends they can enlist will have a better chance - but the opportunity for a student and their family to get a free trip to the Bay Area, even if they live in India, China, Venezuela etc. seems pretty great.</p>

<p>In one way, it’s great that they are involving fellow teenagers in this. In another way, it is distressing because it encourages writing for peer approval when peers may not know that much about music :)</p>
