As for the acronyms, I just assume all "H"s I see stand for Hill. Works for me.
As for the HUGE variety of schools, going through the process with DS and watching a nephew do the same this year, I want to enroll! I’m so jealous of all the fun Ds is having. Think they would notice a 43 year old freshman? Right now, I would lean toward Millbrook, because they have a zoo. Or the Rocky Mountain School, so then I could be a Rocky Mountain Oyster.
I really do need a life. Not that I’m not enjoying being an empty nester…
@sunnyschool: I would not say that ALL the schools are excellent. If we were to survey ALL the boarding schools in the country, I’d even hazard a guess that some might not even be great.
But certainly all of the ones discussed here with any frequency are all solid and would serve 95% of the applicants perfectly.
@gusmom2000 After a tour, the AO asked me what did my son think of the tour. I told her I had not talked with him yet but if she didn’t mind I was going to apply instead of him.
@gusmom2000 My grandfather went to Hill in the Dark Ages - all boys then. Flashfoward 65 years, I attended an all girls HS that sang with their choir every December. We did Handel’s Messiah. My grandfather died young. Every year it was an emotional night as my dad watched me from the same pews that his young father had sat. He laughed that he could feel his young father squirming through chapel. Beautiful chapel, and a beautiful shared memory with my Dad @ Hill!
@Mama2Drama Maybe if you share what you find out about those schools as you go along, there will be more for others to read. In other words: “if you build it, they will come.” Good luck! There are some occasional posts about Asheville and Indian Springs so don’t give up.
@Mama2Drama My kiddo applied at Asheville and was waitlisted there. We both have nothing but good things to say about that school! They’re pretty unique and have a lot of great programs!!
@Mama2Drama: For better or worse, the board is mostly focused on a handful of New England schools.
But as london203 notes, all it takes is one or two parents to elevate the profile of other, lesser known schools. Somewhat recently, a parent connected to Episcopal (Alexandria, VA) shared a lot about his family’s experience with the school and I think it was info appreciated by all.
