New Jeopardy host preference? / Jeopardy updates

2 of the three GMA hosts… interesting

I tuned in for Anderson and loved him, at least compared to Rodgers. I wondered whether it’s just because I know his voice. It didn’t feel jarring, as Rodgers’ did.

Ds2 is in broadcasting and has STRONG feelings about the next host. Interestingly, early on he thought George Stephanopoulos would be an excellent pick, because he knows not to make it about him, that his job isn’t to be the star but to facilitate the game.

If reports are true about the spat between Stephanopoulos and Muir, I don’t think its accurate to say that George knows not to make it about him. Reports indicate that the issue was who would lead special coverage of breaking news stories/special events. When that went to Muir, George threatended to leave the network.

I see a ton of arrogance in George. In Anderson as well. I expect a lot of people here wouldn’t. But truth be told, when you get to the level of celebrity that almost all of these guest hosts have, there will be a certain level of arrogance and ego.

Interesting in that Alex didn’t come to the show a star. Will the next host be one before being selected? Could point to Richards as the next permanent host.

@saillakeerie I’m curious how you measure arrogance/ego in these specific guest hosts. Curious what you have cued into - on the show - that feels like arrogance/ego.

Arrogance/ego are in the eyes of the beholder. There is no objective test for either to my knowledge. Ask 10 people to indicate whether they think 50 people on a list of names are arrogant/have big egos and you will get different views.

In terms of the show, no episodes with George as the guest host have aired so no cues there. Have watched 3 episodes to date with Anderson. Noted a couple days ago that his arrogance has not really shown through at this point. But I expect that would change if he hosted longer. From what I understand, the 2 weeks of episodes for each guest host have been taped over 2 days. Newness and nervousness limit your true self from coming out to a certain degree.

As for my view of George and Anderson, its from everything I have read written by and about them and from watching them on TV over the many years each has been on air. Different people have different views.

I wasn’t questioning your opinion - was just wondering what make you draw that opinion on them - I assumed it was something you noted on their Jeopardy performance. Now I think I understand that your view of their arrogance/ego is formed outside of and before their Jeopardy appearance.

Nope. All based outside and before their Jeopardy appearances. George was just announced as a guest host this week and his episodes have not been taped.

Anderson was better with the pace of his ruling on responses. Each of the guest hosts has had problems responding when the constestants shorten the response (such as by using just the last name). You have the focus on reading the clue correctly, calling on the applicable contestant for a response (the correct one of which is in front of you) but they alter or shorten it in some way (that is still valid under the rules) and I think it throws you a little for a loop. Just a split second changes the flow of the game. And none of that is to say I would be any good as a host. I wouldn’t. Happy to side back on my couch and shout out occassional correct responses from time to time. And some really horrificic ones as well.

Looking forward to LeVar and Robin Roberts…think they will be good. Don’t know Faber. And I will be listening to Joe Buck the same way as when he was announcing the US Open golf tournament for Fox—with the volume off. For some reason, he annoys me to no end. Maybe I had just too high of expectations after his dad…

I have a friend who cannot stand Joe Buck. It amuses me. I sent him the link that Buck was a guest host, and he said that if Buck is the permanent replacement that assures he’ll never watch again.

That is an issue with going with an established celebrity as permanent host. No matter who it is, there will be people who do not like him/her. Not sure if that will play a role in the decision.

I read tonight that the last group of guest hosts will host for one week each rather than 2 like the previous guest hosts have done.

I didn’t care until LeVar Burton threw his hat in the ring. Now I have someone to root for!

Just read this

" LeVar Burton will host a week of Jeopardy! this summer, after nearly 250,000 people signed a petition backing the actor and director’s long-held aspiration to try out for the job that was left vacant by Alex Trebek, who died last year."

This was a huge effort on social media (twitter) after LeVar made it clear he wanted the opportunity.

I don’t think anyone here has answered my question about whether any (or who) of these guest hosts are sincere or gunning for the opportunity to get the gig? I could understand someone like Ken Jennings (though not sure he really wants it) but not the bigger celebs. But I could be wrong!

I watched Anderson last night for the first time…and he is far and away the best I’ve seen to date.

As for his interest, almost anyone can find a way to work 4 days per month for $20M+ per year. Talk about lifestyle…he could leave nightly TV, replace his income, and have more time for family and other projects.

Once established as the “new” Alex, he could do that job for decades. AC 360 could end in a flash…you never know.

As I just commented…it’s serious cash for a part-time job. They record a week / day, and do it over 2 days in a row every 2 weeks (remember, contestants have lives they can’t just put on hold for weeks also).

It’s an amazing job to have…and almost anyone would have to consider it seriously if asked.

I’m pretty sure Aaron Rodgers has indicated that he would be open to the job. Even though he was the MVP last year, he is at the tail end of his playing career :sob:

He has said that he is not interested in going into sports broadcasting. And 20 million a year is not much of a pay cut lol! He’s made plenty of money and I think he would do this for less. Doesn’t need the salary anyways.

LeVar Burton is intriguing.

It might not be any of the guest hosts, they are what I would call stunt casting. Not serious contenders.

P.S. I love Joe Buck

Do you want to bet?

Jeopardy (prior to the pandemic) was taped on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for 3 weeks each month from July through April. They share a production crew with Wheel of Fortune. Those are very long days (sometimes 10-12 hours for Alex). The days he wasn’t taping, he was probably having production meetings either in the studio or from home. It is more than just a side gig.

Not sure where you work, but 25-30 hours every two weeks is a part time job. It wouldn’t qualify for health benefits. They tape 23 weeks per year (230 shows/yr). That’s 1/3rd of a standard 40/wk work year.

Pile on the $15M-$20M salary…and as I said above, it’s about the best gig I know of.

As for Anderson Cooper, it has to be infinitely less taxing than doing a nightly news-based show 5 days a week. Interviews and live discussion vs. the taped reading of questions?

I’m by no means saying it’s easy to do, but he has the skills needed for the job. He’s the best so far because he doesn’t stumble on the odd words and phrases. Dalton and Yale apparently prepare you well for future opportunity.
